Magnus claims top spot in WCS Invitational

Josh Magnus emerged the top runner during the annual Wayne Christian Invitational cross country meet contested at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park on Friday afternoon.

Magnus ran the challenging course in 19 minutes, 6 seconds and helped the Eagles easily defeat Princeton 29-61 in the team portion of the race. Teammates Justin Brathwaite (19:08) and Connor Jones (20:02) claimed second and third, respectively.

Ethan Anderson led the Dawgs with a sixth-place time of 21:04.

On the girls' side, Berean Christian's Emily Dundore crossed the finish line first in 23:09, nearly half a minute ahead of Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price.

Princeton's Brittany Rainbow (24:26) and Maegan Hewett (24:29) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, and helped the Dawgs edge Wilson Christian 50-59 for the team crown. Berean was third with 93 points, followed by Wayne Christian with 108.

Hattie Dougherty (24:41) ended up ninth for Princeton.

The Eagles' Kayla Kennedy (29:12) and Christina Foster (32:26) wound up 19th and 26th, respectively.

Other schools participating included Kerr-Vance Academy, Hobgood Academy and Wilmington Christian.

Wayne Christian runs again Monday at Princeton.

Eagles take South

ERWIN -- Josh Powers supplied the game-winning goal in the 69th minute and Wayne Christian captured the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference South Division title with a 3-1 victory over Cape Fear Christian.

The Eagles (11-6, 7-3 CCC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Bradley Yelverton scored off a direct kick taken by Powers.

Cape Fear tallied the equalizer on a direct kick just after halftime.

As play progressed and the intensity increased, Powers scored off Travis Thomas' assist. Minutes later, Yelverton intercepted a goal kick and sealed the outcome with his second goal.

Eagles keeper Chase King recorded five saves in goal.

Wayne Christian begins CCC tournament play Monday.

Volleyball

Eagles spiked in CCCplay

ERWIN -- Hanna Kaler dished out 18 assists in Wayne Christian's regular season-ending 18-25, 27-29, 25-23, 15-25 loss at Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Cape Fear Christian.

Kaler added four kills and one block for the Eagles, who fell to 13-6 overall and 11-2 in CCC play. Katie Daniels provided 12 kills and eight digs defensively. Devan Isenhower contributed seven kills.

Kaitlyn Kosuda contributed five kills and two blocks. Allison Rose recorded eight digs.

Wayne Christian begins Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament play at 5 p.m. on Oct. 14 at home.
