Warriors outlast Gators on diamond

Eastern Wayne used two big innings to blow open its non-conference battle against county rival Spring Creek on Monday afternoon.

The Warriors snapped a two-game skid with a 12-8 victory.

"We were swinging the bats really well tonight," Warrior Jabo Fulghum said after the game. "We had a couple real good at-bats and hit a lot of balls hard that went for outs."

Starting pitcher Anthony Otellio lasted just three batters after walking two, and leaving the third with a three-ball count. Reliever Nolan Lancaster balked, to give Spring Creek the game's first run after recording two outs. An infield error led to two additional runs for the Gators.

Eastern Wayne (1-2 overall) answered in its half of the first, plating four runs on four hits -- including Jose Ponce's 2-run homer.

"Jose played a great game for us both at the plate and in the field," Fulghum said.

The Warriors broke the open the game in the third inning.

Tyler Wicks fueled the eight-run uprising with a one-out double. After grounding out in his first at-bat of the inning, John Wooten connected on a grand slam over the center field fence.

Eastern Wayne led 12-3.

Spring Creek responded in the fourth on Dontay Boseman's two-RBI double. One inning later, the Gators collected three runs on Kevin Prunest's home run -- a three-run blast.

"We didn't throw strikes tonight and we walked entirely too many batters, but it's early in the season and you'll have those sort of things," Fulghum said.

The Warriors entertain South Central today.
