Mount Olive falls to Wingate

MOUNT OLIVE -- Lindsay Brennan moved into second place on the school's all-time scoring list, but Mount Olive College dropped a 5-1, non-conference decision to Wingate University at Amon Field.

Brennan's goal, the 31st of her career, in the 78th minute denied the Bulldogs' shutout bid. Teammate April Jacobs supplied her 44th career assist on the play. Jacobs entered the season leading all active NCAA Division II players in career assists.

Madi Welch and Kelly Mottola paced Wingate (3-4-1 overall) with two goals and an assist apiece. The duo combined for three first-half goals as the Bulldogs led 3-0 at intermission.

Wingate had only two shots in the first 16 minutes of the second half, but converted both attempts into goals. Jordan Mayer stole a service and found Smith for an 18-yard shot in the 56th minute, then Mottola found Welch open for an 18-yard shot five minutes later to stretch the Bulldogs' lead to 5-0.

Brennan converted a corner kick from Jacobs to complete the scoring.

Trojan goalie Amanda Huber came off the bench to record four saves in 28 shutout minutes in goal for Mount Olive. Kathryn Smith made one save for Wingate in the first half and Sarah Bollman added two saves in the second half.

Wingate outshot Mount Olive 14-5.

Mount Olive fell to 2-5 overall.

Golf

NEW LONDON -- Kristin Moberg matched her second-lowest 18-hole score in Mount Olive women's golf history, a second-round 76, and tied for third overall during the Lady Falcon Invitational.

Moberg competed among 52 golfers in the two-day event, which was hosted by Conference Carolinas rival Pfeiffer University. The Trojans finished eighth in the 10-team tournament with a 36-hole total of 722.

Moberg carded a 157 and finished just five shots behind the overall winner. The tournament marked Moberg's second consecutive third-place tie in as many tournaments this season. Last week, she shot a 76 in the first round and tied for third at the Anderson University Invite.

Former Eastern Wayne standout Kristen Freeman (179) tied for 32nd. Deborah Woodrum (193) and Lindsey Becker (193) tied for 41st, while freshman Brooke Newell (197) ended up 44th. All five Trojan golfers lowered their scores from the first round to the second round.
