ROCKY MOUNT -- Gregory Alexander provided the game's lone goal and Wayne Christian stunned No. 5-ranked Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 1-0 on Friday afternoon.

Alexander scored off an assist from brother Brian in the 14th minute.

Keeper Eric Williams stopped 12 Patriot shots behind a short-handed defense that missed Andrew Radford. Head coach Daryl Anderson said John Thomas Norris, Travis Thomas and Matt Rouse stepped up and "took leadership positions on defense."

The Eagles (5-1-0 overall) return to action Tuesday at Erwin Cape Fear Christian in Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference play.

Dawgs sweep Aycock

PRINCETON -- Charles B. Aycock's Dante Woodard and Caroline Schlaeppi each emerged victorious in their respective divisions, but Princeton swept the non-conference meet.

Woodard posted the top boys' time of 20 minutes, 21 seconds. Teammates Daulton Denning and Travis Reeves ended up fourth and sixth, respectively.

However, the Bulldogs placed five runners among the top eight for a tight 25-30 win. Adam Peedin and Chris Hinton crossed the line second and third, respectively. Jason Massey was fourth.

On the girls' side, Schlaeppi out-ran the Dawgs' Olivia Booker by 19 seconds to take first place. Princeton put five runners among the top nine and escaped 27-30.

Princeton's Meagan Hewett ended up third. The Golden Falcons' Megan Hales and Lorena Estrada completed the top five.

Warriors shut out Fike

Johnathan Midgett rushed for 200 yards as Eastern Wayne throttled Wilson Fike 20-0 at Little Big Horn.

Ryan Jones added 51 yards on six carries, while Lamar Best threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Rashawn Barnes.

Top defenders were Brandon Williams, Hunter Newsome, Danta Jones and Chris Bell.

The Warriors (3-0 overall) travel to West Craven next Thursday.

Tennis

Saints trounce Bruins

MOUNT OLIVE -- Southern Wayne swept the singles and doubles in a 9-0 trouncing of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Beddingfield.

Tara Hirsch, Katlyn Thornton, Amber Bowden, April Tucker, Brianna Lofton and Stephanie Cox each earned a straight-set singles win. The same six players combined for three doubles points.

Southern Wayne (5-3 overall, 1-1 ECC) visits North Lenoir on Monday.
