Goldsboro claims impressive victory

While subtropical storm Gabrielle churns off the Atlantic Coast, Goldsboro High has developed its own, powerful weather system -- thunder (Hykeem Coley) and lightning (Anthony Council) -- this season.

Council, who returned from a two-week absence, and Coley combined for 359 yards rushing and five touchdowns in the Cougars' 59-7 rout over county rival Charles B. Aycock.

"I call those two backs 'thunder and lightning,'" said Goldsboro head coach Eric Reid. "When you've got thunder and lightning in the backfield, and you get control of one, the other one breaks free. They're a beautiful tandem."

Coley proved the Cougars' offense would be unstoppable when he broke loose for a 74-yard touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage.

After Andrew Phifer intercepted Aycock quarterback Stephen Strouse, Council's 38-yard run set up Coley's second touchdown -- a 6-yard run. Coley's two-point conversion put the Cougars on top 14-0.

Slowed by an Achilles injury, Strouse didn't return to the game.

Devin Sanders' 80-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff momentarily breathed new life into the Golden Falcons.

But touchdown runs from Iveon Sprangle and quarterback Dustin Uzzardo pushed the lead to 26-7. Uzzardo threw a career-best, 94-yard touchdown pass to Phifer later in the second quarter to give Goldsboro a 34-7 lead at halftime.

Council and Coley combined for three third-quarter touchdowns. Two Golden Falcon turnovers set up the scores.

"We compliment each other," Council said of he and Coley. "We're like family in the backfield. We'll block for each other. When it comes down to game time it doesn't matter (who scores more)."

A.J. Parker's 1-yard plunge concluded the scoring. Goldsboro compiled a staggering season-high 620 yards of total offense, including 427 yards on the ground.

"Our line did a great job for us," Coley said. "We see our line pushing out holes and then we know what we've got to do for our line. When they block for us, we help out for four quarters."

C.B. Aycock (0-3) managed just 173 yards of total offense.

"When we did get on the field we could run and make gains but we could never put it all together," C.B. Aycock coach Randy Pinkowski said. "We dropped passes, and saw things we wanted to take advantage of. We just didn't convert tonight."

Goldsboro (2-2 overall) welcomes county rival Southern Wayne next Friday, while the Golden Falcons play host to Wilson Fike. Each game kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
