Unbeaten Tigers throttle Trask

WARSAW -- They may be teammates, but James Kenan's Brandon Satchell and Duan Alston engaged in a friendly game of "anything you can do I can better" on Friday evening.

Satchell rumbled for 132 yards and three touchdowns -- all in the first half. Alston returned a kickoff and an interception for touchdowns in the second half as the Tigers routed Heide Trask 54-6 at Bill Taylor Field.

After scampering for 24 yards on his first carry of the night, Satchell got the call three straight times and capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt failed and James Kenan led 6-0 less than four minutes into the game.

The first of Heide Trask's five lost fumbles began the second quarter, and set up Stedman Mathis' score from four yards out. Jorge Vasquez's extra point put the Tigers on top 13-0.

Kenan's (3-0) defense looked solid in the first half before most of its starters were given the rest of the night off. The Titans (1-1) mustered just two first downs and were forced to punt five times before intermission. For the night, Trask tallied just 190 yards of offense and committed six turnovers.

"(Our front seven) has good speed and they work hard and do everything you tell them," James Kenan coach Ken Avent Jr. said.

Satchell repeatedly followed his blockers past the line of scrimmage, only to perform devastating cutback moves seemingly every time he touched the ball. He continued to terrorize the Titans' defense with his second touchdown run of the night from 3-yards out with a little over eight minutes left in the first half. The point after failed and James Kenan led 19-0.

"I was just seeing the holes and they opened up real good," Satchell said. "The cutbacks were great."

A fake punt that resulted in a first down set up Satchell's third and final score that came with less than three minutes remaining before the half. Gurman Funez's extra point was successful and the Tigers lead swelled to 26-0.

Just as it appeared the contest would turn into a sleeper, Alston provided some fireworks when he returned the opening kickoff of the second half 76 yards for a touchdown. Funez tacked on the extra point, and the blowout was official as the margin grew to 33-0.

"We've been working on our kickoff returns," Alston said. "I picked up the ball and I saw a hole and just went for it."

After Eric Morrisey recovered a Titans' fumble, it took the Tigers just five plays to find the endzone, when Shawn Jones hooked up with Chris Marable from 16 yards out. Funez's extra point made the score 39-0.

Alston completed his encore to Satchell's opening act when on Trask's very next play from scrimmage he intercepted Josh Wiggin's pass, and raced 49 yards to the endzone. The extra point was good and Kenan led 47-0.

"Yeah, I guess you could say I was the encore," Alston said with a smile. "We were in cover-three and I just got back behind the receiver and I made sure I broke on the ball."

Akeem Carlton tacked on one final Tigers' touchdown in the fourth quarter, as seven different players for James Kenan took turns running the ball for a combined 237 yards and five touchdowns.

Trask managed to score on a 25-yard pass from Wiggins to Montez Farrior late in the fourth quarter, but after three convincing wins to open the season, the Tigers are riding a steady wave of momentum and confidence.

"The key to us and we talk about it, is we just want to keep getting better as the year goes on," Avent Jr. said. "We feel like if we can just continue to get better we have a chance later on in the season."
