DURHAM -- Knowing Durham-Hillside liked to throw the deep ball, Goldsboro's coaches had its players ready to defend the pass. On the first play of the game, Tyquan Sprangle intercepted a long pass giving the Cougars confidence.
Unfortunately for Goldsboro, the long passes continued as the Hornets bombared the Cougars' secondary for two long second-quarter scores. Goldsboro couldn't recover and fell 30-16 on Friday night.
The Cougars (1-2 overall) dropped their second straight since a 48-0 opening-night win over Rosewood.
Hykeem Coley had another strong night, rushing 27 times for 228 yards and two touchdowns while Antonio Parker had 72 yards. Overall, Goldsboro rushed for 303 yards as a team.
Hillside opened the scoring with two long scoring passes in the first quarter -- a 39-yard pass and an 82-yard bomb to go up 14-0.
The Cougars defense, led by newcomers Alex Aldrige and Lamar Hicks, clamped down and held the Hornets scoreless in the second quarter. Meanwhile the Goldsboro offense got on the board thanks to Coley.
The senior running back scored from 35-yards and Parkers two-point conversion run made it 14-8 at the half.
Hillside turned to the ground game in the second half to build an insermountable lead. Two rushing tochdowns and two conversions made it 30-8 Hornets.
Goldsboro would get another big run from Coley, a 31-yard scoring run, to pull to within 30-16, but would get no closer.
