Wayne Christian continued its hot start to open the season with a 4-0 shutout of Johnston Christian Academy on Tuesday.

Matt Davis got the Eagles on the board 14 minutes in when he scored on a assist from Taylor Gardner. Goalie Eric Williams assisted on Wayne Christian's second goal as he fed Andrew Radford who found the back of the net making it 2-0.

Williams and Travis Thomas closed the scoring with second half goals.

Wayne Christian coach Daryl Anderson gave high praise to his defenders Matt Rouse, John Norris and Jordan Crouthamel for their outstanding play.

The Eagles improve to 4-0 overall and 4-0 in Class 1-A Carolina Christian play. They host Fayetteville Christian Academy on Sept. 4.

Volleyball

Gators pick up road win

NEWTON GROVE -- Spring Creek took all three games from Hobbton 25-5, 25-16, 25-23 on Tuesday evening.

Tasha Whitfield had a strong game leading the Gators with 14 kills to go along with 2 aces. Kristin Smith added 12 kills and three aces while Brooke Albertson contributed 15 assists for Spring Creek.

The Gators improve to 2-0 overall and host Hobbton on Sept. 4.

Rebels fall to Lakewood

CALYPSO -- North Duplin dropped all three games to Lakewood, falling 25-8, 25-11, 25-17 on Tuesday evening.

Heather Hudson and Sam Cates both recorded two kills apiece while Felicia Lynch contributed three assists.

Rams turn back CBA

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central knocked off C.B. Aycock 25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 26-24 in non-conference action Tuesday evening.

Beth Carter pounded out a career-high 19 kills for the Golden Falcons.

"Leigh Smith did a really good job setting and playing the floor tonight," said C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris. "We're inexperienced, but we're getting better. I'm seeing some improvement and that's what we want to do as we get ready for conference."

C.B. Aycock (0-3 overall) plays host to North Lenoir on Thursday. Greene Central is 1-2.

Union edges Eagles

CLINTON -- Union needed four games to fight off Rosewood 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21 on Tuesday evening.

Ashley Williams led the Rosewood attack with eight kills while Caroline Tart added seven kills.

Jennifer Hall led the Eagles with 14 assists.

Rosewood, 1-1 overall, will host Midway today.

Hawks dispatch Vikings

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir defeated Kinston in three games 25-17, 25-20 and 25-12 on Tuesday evening.

Melissa Lanier recorded 12 kills to lead the Hawks while Kayla Sutton added eight. Jordan Hudson tallied six aces and Kristen Davenport had four for North Lenoir.

The Hawks improve to a perfect 3-0 and host South Lenoir today.

Cross country

Warriors take ECC meet

DUDLEY -- The boys and girls teams at Eastern Wayne were both victorious during an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tri-meet on a hot Tuesday afternoon.

The Eastern Wayne boys just got by Beddingfield 35 to 42. Southern Wayne was third with 58 points.

Tim Wright paced the Warriors with a second place finish and an overall time of 21:48 on the 3.1 mile course. Eastern Wayne's Stefan Henshaw was just behind in third with a time of 22:04.

Southern Wayne was led by Chase Garner and Jordan Hood who finished fifth and sixth respectively.

In the girls' meet, Eastern Wayne ran virtually uncontested as they took the top seven spots.

Kelly Gregorcyk of Eastern Wayne placed first with a time of 27:33 with Sarah Ricker coming in just tenths of a second behind.

Southern Wayne's top finisher was Amanda Barfield with an overall time of 37:40.

Gryphons too much for GC

ROCKY MOUNT -- Greene Central dropped two of three doubles matches to narrowly fall to 3-A power Rocky Mount 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

Third seeded Cally Hudson defeated Kate Gray 6-3, 4-6 (10-8) to get the Rams going. Abby Sugg and Lauren Carraway also added singles victories.

"I was very proud of my girls today," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "We played a great match on the road against one of the best 3-A teams in the state. I feel like matches like this will do nothing but help us down the road as we get closer to the state playoffs."

Greene Central falls to 3-2 overall and next hosts Southern Wayne today.

Aycock tops Greenfield

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock took all nine matches contested against Greenfield and one 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Top seeded Kristen Prosser had the only close call for the Golden Falcons as she needed three sets to dispatch Elizabeth Cobb 2-6, 6-2 (10-6).

"Our team played well in both singles and doubles," said Aycock coach Luke Vail. "I was especially pleased with our consistency, concentration and mental toughness."

Aycock improves to 3-1 and travels to Wilson Fike today.

Wayne Christian had no trouble taking down Johnston Community Christian as they won 9-0 at Herman Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Top seeded Brooke Barfield led the Eagles' attack as she quickly dispatched Tiffany Hills 6-0, 6-0.

New Bern beats EW

NEW BERN -- Despite a terrific performance from Jasminie Reeves, Eastern Wayne fell to New Bern 265-306 on Tuesday afternoon.

Reeves carded an 85 to finish first overall. Other finishers for Eastern Wayne were Erica Freeman who recorded a 105, Madison Sauls a 116, Hannah Grantham a 126 and Katie Parrish finished with a 138.

Eastern Wayne's next match will be Thursday when it hosts New Bern.

Walnut Creek

At Walnut Creek this past week, winner of play of the day went to Faye Franklin. Gaye Bryant recorded low gross, Nancy Satterfield had low net and Pete Reaves tallied low putts.

Chargers hold on

Wayne Country Day got a single goal to hold up in its 1-0 victory over Greenfield on Tuesday afternoon.

Brice Cruger found the back of the net to give the Chargers a lead they'd never relinquish.

James Crooks recorded the clean sheet in goal to help Wayne Country Day even its mark at 1-1 on the season.

Vikings sweep Warriors

Eastern Wayne's Amethyst McPhail collected 10 consecutive points on serve during the second set Tuesday afternoon, but Jacksonville White Oak claimed a 25-12, 26-24 non-conference win.

"Amethyst did a great job serving tonight," said Warriors head coach Bruce Burridge.

Burridge added that Andie Macias also played well.

The Warriors (1-2 overall) travel to Princeton on Thursday.

Gators fall to Wildcats

NEWTON GROVE -- Spring Creek fell to Hobbton in two games 25-14, 25-12 on Tuesday afternoon.

Alex Benton, Mitzi Artega and Emily Thompson each recorded a kill for the Gators. Randi Oxendine had three assists and two aces for Spring Creek who fell to 0-2.

Aycock edges Rams

SNOW HILL -- Charles B. Aycock defeated Greene Central 26-4, 16-25, 25-16 in a tightly contested match on Tuesday.

Chelsea Larson recorded five kills while Tia Jackson served four aces for the Golden Falcons.

Aycock improves to 2-1 overall and next hosts North Lenoir. Greene Central falls to 2-1.

Leopards defeat Rebels

CALYPSO -- North Duplin dropped both of its games to Lakewood 25-10, 25-3 on Tuesday.

Amanda White had three digs for the Rebels.

Union turns back Rosewood

CLINTON -- Union defeated Rosewood in two games 25-9 25-17 on Tuesday.

Rachel Kornegay and Karen Babb both tallied two kills for the Eagles (0-2).

Hawks stay unbeaten

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir made quick work of Kinston, winning 25-12, 25-10 on Tuesday.
