DURHAM -- Garrett Davis, Sthil Sowers and Colin Parker have been selected players of the year in their respective classifications by the N.C. Baseball Coaches Association.
Davis helped lead Charles B. Aycock to the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A championship -- the program's first since 1974 and just its second overall. Davis has signed with North Carolina.
Sowers, who was drafted by the New York Yankees, guided North Lenoir to its third consecutive appearance in the NCHSAA 2-A championship series. The Hawks lost to East Rutherford.
An outfielder/pitcher, Parker helped Princeton emerge the 1-A state champion and hasn't announced his college intentions. The Bulldogs claimed their first state title since 1994 and third overall in school history.
Additional all-state selections were Grant Sasser (C.B. Aycock), Brandon Sutton (N. Lenoir), Andrew Manning (N. Lenoir), Bryce Grady (N. Lenoir), Tyler Smith (N. Lenoir), Daniel Gerrell (Princeton), Ryan Daughtry (Princeton) and Rosewood catcher David Smeltzer.
Sutton and Manning are headed to Appalachian State, while Smith has signed with Mount Olive College. Gerrell has committed to Florence-Darlington Tech. Smeltzer is headed to Brunswick Community College, which will play its first-ever JUCO schedule in 2008.
