Snow Hill Post 94 stays alive for playoff berth

WINTERVILLE -- Lance Murray smacked a home run and Snow Hill Post 94 kindled its playoff aspirations with an 8-3 victory over Area I East South Division rival Pitt County 160 on Sunday evening.

Post 94 improved to 3-6 against South opposition, which further muddled the six-team division. Snow Hill (11-8 overall) moved within 1 1/2 games of Post 160 in the standings, and needs some help to clinch a playoff berth.

Post 160 suffered its third straight defeat.

Murray batted 3-for-5 and drove in four runs. Hunter Chase collected three hits in five plate appearances. Will Rhem (double), Justin Bagley and Trey Beaman (RBI) contributed two hits apiece.

Snow Hill's Jordan Corbett scattered eight hits in seven-plus innings and retired six Post 160 batters on strikeouts for the mound win. Robert Tyndall provided one-plus innings of one-hit, two-strikeout relief.

Post 39 edges Post 94

Andy Powers supplied the game-winning hit and Pitt County Post 39 secured a playoff berth with a 2-1, 12-inning triumph over Snow Hill Post 94 on Saturday evening.

With two outs, Daniel Boyd drove a fly ball to left center field, which resulted in a double. Powers followed with his game-clinching single and preserved Post 39's bid to defend its Area I East Division crown.

Snow Hill seized a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Murray connected on a lead-off single and moved into scoring position on Rhem's base knock. Tyler Chase plated Murray with a base hit, but neither Rhem nor Chase scratched in the scoring column.

Post 39 forged a 1-1 tie in the fifth on consecutive infield errors.

Post 94 never threatened again and finished with a season-high 19 strikeouts in the extra-inning affair. Snow Hill stranded eight base runners and managed just four hits -- one each from Murray, Rhem, Chase and Bagley.

Mark Wilder earned the mound win in relief of Cameron Rollins.

Bagley, who tossed four innings of four-strikeout relief, endured the pitching loss for Post 94. Drew Sowers yielded seven hits and notched 10 strikeouts in a nine-inning stint.

Post 39 evened its overall ledger at 8-8 and logged its fifth South Division victory in 10 outings. Pitt County, directed by first-year head coach Jon Allen Conway, split a non-division doubleheader with Edenton on Sunday afternoon.

Snow Hill entertains Nash County at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
