Robert Coates' family has never had the chance to see him play college football.
Now, that's about to change.
A former quarterback at Goldsboro High School, Coates has signed with Clark Atlanta University.
Coates is arriving to Clark Atlanta after transferring from Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. There he set numerous passing records including 32 career touchdown passes and 3,779 yards.
"We're expecting Robert to come here, start and take over the offense right away," said Clark Atlanta head coach Ted Bahhur. "He has an experienced offensive line and four strong wide receivers to work with. He has everything in his hands now."
Coates is excited to see what his talent can do at the NCAA Division II level.
"It's a good fit," said Coates. "It's six hours away and that's closer than 27. I'm comfortable with the system they run and the formations they use."
Following school Coates plans to get into coaching, that is unless he has a calling in a professional football league.
"If you perform, someone will see you," said Coates.
