Two regular-season titles and three second-place efforts during the spring sports season enabled Eastern Wayne to claim a share of the 2007 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference Wachovia Cup along with Wilson Hunt.

The two athletic programs amassed 183 points apiece.

Eastern Wayne successfully defended its men's tennis crown and emerged the top team during the season-ending women's track meet. The varsity baseball, women's soccer and men's track squads each collected a second-place finish.

Hunt won the women's soccer and men's track titles.

Charles B. Aycock piled up 178.5 points and repeated as the ECC champion in varsity baseball, varsity softball and men's golf. The Golden Falcon men's tennis team ended up second, while women's soccer placed third.

Beddingfield was fourth overall in the six-member conference with 147.5 points. Southern Wayne and Kinston collected 139 and 109 points, respectively.

EPC 2-A

Greene Central edged Farmville Central 60.5-54 to claim the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference Wachovia Cup.

Despite not winning a spring title, the Rams benefited from second-place finishes in men's golf, women's track and men's tennis. Meanwhile, the Jaguars captured the men's and women's track championships, and took third overall in men's golf.

North Lenoir seized its third consecutive EPC crown and wrapped up first place in men's golf. The Hawks ended up with 52 points -- just 1/2-point ahead of North Pitt, which repeated as the EPC softball champion.

Tarboro High was fifth, followed by Goldsboro High.

Carolina 1-A

North Johnston won regular-season titles in softball and men's tennis, but couldn't overcome Rosewood, which had a solid spring campaign in every sport.

The Eagles, who placed first among the 1-A schools in the Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A girls soccer standings, finished with a 59-57.5 edge over the Panthers. Coach Josh Smith directed the baseball team to a runner-up showing and softball ended up among the top four.

Princeton, which dominated the women's track scene, took third over with 47 points. Ayden-Grifton, which emerged the men's track champion, placed fourth with 46.5 points.

Spring Creek and North Duplin tallied 32 and 22 points, respectively.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the N.C. High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performances within their respective athletic conferences.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy, is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award given to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the four classifications.

Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

Independents

County archrivals Wayne Christian and Wayne Country Day each placed among the top 10 in the season-ending, N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A Wachovia Cup competition.

Wayne Christian, which won state titles in men's golf and softball, compiled 202.5 points and ended up a program-best fifth overall among the state's 27 schools.

Wayne Country Day seized its first-ever state championship in baseball and wound up ninth with 157.5 points.
