The Brittany III: WCDS emerges lone area team to collect win

WILSON -- Catherine Ford notched the game-winning goal in the 65th minute and Wayne Country Day edged Wilmington Cape Fear Academy 2-1 in The Brittany III contested Saturday morning.

Ford scored off Mack Thompson's assist and the No. 1-ranked Chargers improved to 6-2 overall. Senior Georgia Crow notched WCDS' first goal and has scored in seven of eight matches this season.

In other games involving area schools, Greenfield edged Rosewood 1-0; Wilson Fike handed Charles B. Aycock a 6-0 setback; and Faith Christian-Rocky Mount defeated Wayne Christian 2-0.

Rocky Mount shut out Rosewood 6-0 on Friday.

Golf

Harrington, Brindley

finish 2-3 in A Flight

WILSON -- Goldsboro's Kevin Harrington and Kevin Brindley carded identical 18-hole rounds of 76 in the Flight A division during the season-opening Amateur Golf Tour event at Wedgewood Golf Course.

Fellow Wayne Countian Carl Evans finished first among Flight C competitors with a 79. Cory Watson was 13th overall.

The next AGT event is scheduled for Apr. 4 at River Bend Country Club in New Bern.

Baseball

State-ranked Hawks

outlast Jaguars

FARMVILLE -- North Lenoir erupted for 11 sixth-inning runs and seized a come-from-behind, 13-10 victory over Farmville Central on Friday evening.

The Jaguars led 6-1 after five innings before the Hawks, ranked No. 3 in the ImpactBaseball.com poll, bounced back for their 10th consecutive victory.

Bryce Grady paced North Lenoir with three hits and two RBI in five at-bats. Andrew Manning (1-for-3) tripled and drove in four runs. Brandon Sutton contributed two hits and an RBI.

Sthil Sowers, Taylor Ginn, C.C. Croom, George Walters and John Alphin contributed one hit apiece. Alphin earned the mound win, yielding eight hits and striking out three in a five-inning stint.

Dewitt Pope threw two innings of three-strikeout relief for the save.

Spencer Albritton emerged the Jaguars' top hitter with four hits in five trips to the plate. Will Rhem slugged two home runs, and finished with three hits and six RBI in four at-bats.

North Lenoir (10-1 overall, 1-0 EPC) entertains Tarboro High at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Softball

Panthers cruise

past Rosewood

KENLY -- Jessica Price slapped a two-run home run in the fifth inning during Rosewood's 11-2 loss at defending Carolina 1-A Conference champion North Johnston on Friday evening.

Courtney Hill added two hits for the Eagles, who dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Amber Weaver doubled twice and belted a solo home run for the Panthers, who climbed to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the league. Amanda Sharpe, Casey Creech, Kayla Whitley, Whitney Parrish and Shanice Williams contributed two hits apiece.

Mindy Narron doubled in her lone at-bat.

Right-hander Jessica Narron allowed six hits and struck out three in a complete-game effort for the Panthers. Eagle right-hander Haile Meadows surrendered 12 hits in six innings.

Rosewood travels to Union today, while North Johnston continues league play Tuesday at county archrival Princeton.

Baker, Franklin

lead Warrior girls

KINSTON -- Eugenia Baker and Brittany Franklin emerged double winners during Eastern Wayne's three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Kinston.

Baker claimed the 100-meter dash in 13.08 seconds and the 200 dash in 26.70. Franklin won the high jump with a leap of four feet, four inches and posted a first-place time of 19.49 in the 100-meter high hurdles.

The duo helped the Warriors amass 80 points. The host Vikings had 61, while county foe Charles B. Aycock collected 29 points.

Eastern Wayne also received individual wins from Alicia Stevens (300 hurdles) and Noelle Kelly. Kelly and Baker participated on two winning relays -- the 800 and 1,600. Alicia Artis and Q'uanica Allen each ran a leg on the 800-meter relay. Artis and Yasmine Washington each competed on the 1,600 relay.

Weather permitting, the Warriors and Aycock return to action today in the Wayne County Championships at Eastern Wayne. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Little Big Horn.
