Carter, Nordan spark Trojans to non-conference rout

MOUNT OLIVE -- Josh Carter drove in six runs and Stephen Nordan added four runs batted in as nationally 26th-ranked Mount Olive set a school scoring record with a 27-1 victory over Indiana (Pa.) in non-conference baseball Thursday at Scarborough Field.

The Trojans scored 46 runs in the two-game series.

Mount Olive (22-8) scored 20 runs in the first three innings, tallying six runs in each of the first two innings and adding eight runs in the third. David Cooper, who walked to lead off the bottom of the first, hit a two-run single in his second at-bat of the inning. Dustin Richardson singled in a run and Jason Sherrer added an RBI-double in the inning.

Indiana (2-8) scored a run in the top of the second as Paul Bingham doubled with one out and came home on Shawn Schwarz's single. Both Bingham and Schwarz went 2-for-2 for the Crimson Hawks.

Scott Houin led off the bottom of the second with a double and scored on Richardson's RBI single. Carter added a two-run double as the Trojans led 12-1 after two innings.

Carter and Sherrer hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning, Carter's home run a two-run shot. Nordan added a two-run double and Houin doubled home a run to extend the Trojans' lead to 20-1.

Nordan and Carter added RBI singles in the fifth inning to make the score 22-1. After the Trojans pulled most of their starters, Mike Kicia hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Freshman Brandon Savoca capped the scoring with his first collegiate hit, a bases-loaded triple in the eighth inning.

Trojan starter Phillip Pennington pitched four innings, allowing seven hits, striking out four and walking none. Freshman Thomas Newsome (1-0) retired all six batters he faced in two scoreless innings and picked up his first collegiate win. Ryan Barham allowed one hit in two scoreless innings and Bradley Bradshaw retired the side in order in the top of the ninth.
