Trojans sweep CVAC softball awards for 3rd time this season

MOUNT OLIVE -- For the third time in four weeks, Mount Olive swept the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference softball weekly awards as sophomore Kensie Cobb was named CVAC Player of the Week and senior Shauna Cowdrey was named CVAC Pitcher of the Week. Cowdrey becomes the third Mount Olive pitcher to win the award as six different Trojans overall have won a CVAC softball player and/or pitcher of the week award this season. This week also marks the fourth consecutive week a Trojan was named player of the week.

Cobb, a catcher from Greenville (Trinity HS), sparked the Trojans to a 9-7 win over nationally 11th-ranked Georgia College and State, going 3-for-4 with six runs batted in, including what proved to be a game-winning grand slam home run with two outs in the top of the seventh. Cobb's two-run single ignited a four-run fourth inning as Mount Olive rallied from a 4-0 deficit. Her grand slam in the seventh -- Cobb's first collegiate home run -- gave the Trojans enough of a cushion to withstand a rally in Georgia College and State's last at-bat. For the week, Cobb batted .429 and hit safely in each of her last seven games.

Cowdrey, a pitcher from Alta Lomo, Calif., posted a 3-0 record on the week with a 0.41 earned average. She extended her scoreless streak to 24 consecutive innings, pitching six shutout innings in relief in a 6-0 win over Davis and Elkins and tossing five scoreless innings in the Trojans' 7-0 win over Seton Hill. She allowed only one hit in each of the two games. She capped her week with a win over Bluefield State, allowing one earned run in five innings. Cowdrey improved to 6-2 on the season with wins in each of her last five decisions.

Mount Olive (18-7 overall, 2-0 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference) posted a 6-3 record last week, going 3-1 at the Smash Hit Tournament in Savannah, Ga., and 3-2 in the Patriot Invite at Florence, S.C.

Mount Olive resumes CVAC action this week with a pair of doubleheaders. The Trojans travel to Laurinburg on Thursday to take on St. Andrews, then play host to Anderson Saturday at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
