Overtime thrillers: Rosewood, Princeton advance in Carolina 1-A boys tournament

CALYPSO -- Dennis Jones sizzled the nets for a game-high 21 points and Rosewood upended North Duplin 60-56 in quarterfinal-round play in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference tournament Tuesday evening.

The fifth-seeded Eagles (6-16 overall) avenged two regular-season losses to the Rebels, and oppose top-seeded Ayden-Grifton in the semifinals on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena on the Mount Olive College campus.

Adrian Dahnraj complemented Jones with a nine-point outing. Stephen McIntyre added eight points, while Ahmad Jordan and Holt Rains collected seven points apiece.

Chris Graham led the fourth-seeded Rebels with 20 points. Ryan Killette contributed 15. Junior point guard Doug Lloyd pulled down seven rebounds and dished out six assists. Daniel Cates and Brian McDuffy grabbed six rebounds apiece.

Fourth-seeded North Duplin (3-14 overall) became the "bubble" team. Should Rosewood win the tournament, it clinches the league's No. 4 seed for the playoffs and bumps the Rebels from the postseason.

Dawgs survive

PRINCETON -- Third-seeded Princeton needed overtime to turn back county archrival North Johnston 60-54 during opening-round action in the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament.

Daniel Gerrell and Josh Barefoot each recorded a double-double for the Dawgs. Gerrell had 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Barefoot contributed 11 points and 11 boards.

Ryan Daughtry scored 14 points and Josh Holmes added nine.

The teams ended regulation tied at 48. Princeton outscored sixth-seeded North Johnston 12-6 in the extra four-minute session.

The Dawgs (16-9 overall) face second-seeded Spring Creek in semifinal-round play Thursday at Mount Olive College. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

Eagles triumph

in CCC 1-A

T.A. Brannan collected a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Wayne Christian ousted Norlina Christian 69-53 in quarterfinal-round action in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament.

The Eagles (12-10 overall) continue play Friday against Cresset Christian at Norlina Christian. Game time is 8 p.m.

Nick Woods supplied 16 points, four rebounds and four assists. Eric Williams contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, while Shea Gleasman chipped in 10 points.

Faith Christian

conquers Liberty

DURHAM -- Aaron Sladick notched a double-double and T.J. Sasser shined at the free throw line in Faith Christian's 71-51, non-region thrashing of Liberty Christian on Tuesday evening.

Sladick tallied 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Conquerors, who improved to 21-2 overall. Sasser finished with 24 points, including a 10 of 12 showing at the charity stripe, and six steals.

Taylor Stocks added 16 points.

Faith Christian returns to action Friday in the N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region tournament at Berean Christian in Fayetteville.

NORLINA -- Katie Daniels posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Wayne Christian dumped Norlina Christian 57-27 in opening-round play of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament.

Michelle Krug delivered 17 points, five assists and four steals for the Eagles. Brittany Sullivan and Jennifer Price provided six points apiece.

Wayne Christian (7-10 overall) returns to Norlina for a semifinal-round game against Cape Fear Christian on Friday.

Jaguars oust

Cougars in EPC

FARMVILLE -- Junior guard Danielle Irby pumped in a team-high 16 points in Goldsboro's season-ending, 65-62 loss against Farmville Central on Monday evening.

The fourth-seeded Jaguars (14-10) oppose regular-season champion North Lenoir (20-4) in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference semifinals. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Greene Central.

Johneisha Maye tallied 13 points, while Camille Early and Victoria Williams contributed eight points apiece. Early pulled down seven rebounds and blocked six shots in her final prep game.

The backcourt tandem of Ki'ana Williams and Victoria Williams combined for 11 assists.

Goldsboro, the No. 5 seed, concluded the year 5-19.

Dawgs knock

off Spring Creek

PRINCETON -- C.C. Sanders collected a game-high 20 points and Princeton eliminated Spring Creek 53-38 during Monday's quarterfinal-round action in the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament.

Princeton, the No. 4 seed, opposes county archrival and top-seeded North Johnston in semifinal-round play Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena on the Mount Olive College campus

Brittany Baker added 10 points for the Dawgs.

Melanique DeVeaux led a balanced Spring Creek attack with nine points. Maura Phipps and Tasha Whitfield each contributed seven points, while Shaquita Brooks scored six.

The Gators, who have no seniors on this year's roster, finished 3-19 overall.

Wilson Hunt

roars back

WILSON -- Krystal Smith turned in an inspired fourth-quarter performance as Wilson Hunt defeated Southern Wayne 64-55 on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament scene Monday evening.

Smith tallied 14 of her game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter for the third-seeded Warriors, who are the guests of Eastern Wayne today. Game time is 6 p.m. at New Hope.

Southern Wayne led 27-22 at halftime and 40-32 after three quarters. But first-year head coach Chuck Crumpler said his team couldn't contain Smith or Chelsea Atkinson. Atkinson scored nine of her 16 points in the final eight minutes.

The Saints, again, struggled with free throw shooting and missed six consecutive opportunities.

They finished 15 of 27 overall at the free throw stripe compared to 17 of 30 for the Warriors.

Lynneshia Leonard emerged Southern Wayne's top scorer with 18 points. Shakoria Clark and Brianna Lofton tallied 10 points apiece.

Crumpler's team finished the year 7-16 overall and will return everyone next season.

DURHAM -- Brad Floars led four Faith Christian players in double figures with 17 points in a 64-61, overtime victory over Liberty Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Eric Powell pumped in 12 points, while Josh Spencer tallied 11.

Drew Floars knocked down 10 points.

The Conquerors concluded the year 16-3 overall.

Middle schools

Norwayne girls 46, Spring Creek 9 -- Courtney Gilbert scored 11 points and Leigh Johnson added seven for the Cobras. Miranda Hill emerged Spring Creek's top scorer with five points. Norwayne (13-2 overall) concludes regular-season play Thursday at Eastern Wayne.

Norwayne boys 49, Spring Creek 18 -- Shepherd Whitfield and Hunter Dentzer tallied 10 and nine points, respectively, for Norwayne. The Cobras (10-5 overall) are the guests of Eastern Wayne on Thursday.
