CLINTON -- Rosewood triumphed in eight of 11 individual contested matches and captured a 59-21, non-conference decision over Clinton on Friday evening.

But the final score wasn't indicative of the overall match.

The Darkhorses emerged victorious in three of the first five individual bouts and trailed 17-15. However, the Eagles gained momentum with seven wins, including two forfeits, in the final eight matches of the night.

Richie Pelt (145 pounds) and Vontarius Kornegay (171) each earned a pin and kept Rosewood within striking distance early in the match.

"I was very proud of the matches Richie and Vontarius turned in tonight," said Rosewood head coach Bill Edmundson. "These young wrestlers along with Scott Pate, Andrew Sass and Josh Holmes are our future."

Pate and Sass each suffered defeats in the third period, while Holmes (135) pinned the Darkhorses' Mano Sanchez in the last match.

Byron Cavenaugh, J.P. Person, heavyweight Trevor Morris, Jim Bish, Ariel Nacca, J.D. Baker and Chris Hare each captured an individual win.

"Our anchors performed as expected and lead the team which keeps setting records with each win," said Edmundson.

Rosewood (28-7 overall) concludes its regular-season schedule next Tuesday at county rival Spring Creek. The Eagles have already qualified for the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A dual-team playoffs, which begin Feb. 6.
