Preps roundup: Gators get revenge against Princeton

PRINCETON -- No conservative fourth-quarter play.

Not this time.

Haunted by a fourth-quarter loss to Princeton three weeks ago, Spring Creek turned that misfortune in its favor Friday evening. The Gators outscored the Bulldogs 19-4 in the final eight minutes and claimed a come-from-behind 64-59 victory on the Class 1-A Carolina Conference scene.

Spring Creek (5-11 overall) climbed to 3-2 in the league and dealt Princeton (13-7 overall) its second consecutive conference loss.

Daniel Correll emerged the Gators' top scorer with 15 points, including two 3-pointers. Desmund Raiford, plagued by foul trouble, manufactured a double-double -- 12 points, 14 rebounds.

Davis Harris added 11 points, five assists and five rebounds. Josh Wright contributed 10 points, three steals and five rebounds.

Daniel Gerrell and Ryan Daughtry collected 16 and 14 points, respectively, for the Dawgs. Princeton (4-2 Carolina) is the guest of North Duplin next Tuesday.

Spring Creek plays host to league-leading Ayden-Grifton.

Faith Christian

continues winning

Aaron Sladick poured in a game-high 32 points to lead Faith Christian to a 74-62, non-conference victory over Hilltop Christian.

The Conquerors (17-1 overall) claimed their 16th consecutive win.

T.J. Sasser added 15 points, Jeremy Sandlin scored 12 and Taylor Stocks pumped in 10.

Faith Christian travels to Mt. Calvary for a N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A Region game Tuesday.

Golden Falcons

seeking first win

WILSON -- Jordan Carr returned for Charles B. Aycock and teammate Quantay Poole knocked down 11 points in an 88-29 loss at Wilson Beddingfield on Friday evening.

The Golden Falcons (0-20 overall) dropped to 0-6 against Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opposition.

Carr scored two points in first game back since breaking his arm during a preseason scrimmage. Nick Weaver added seven points.

C.B. Aycock entertains state-ranked and ECC co-leader Kinston on Tuesday.

Rams endure

first EPC defeat

SNOW HILL -- Chevalier Howell's 27-point effort wasn't enough as Greene Central suffered a 71-62 loss against Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival North Pitt.

The Rams (13-6 overall) endured their first EPC loss of the season. The Panthers, directed by first-year coach Mark Carson, improved to 11-6 overall and 4-2 against league opposition.

Brandon Sutton added 21 points for Greene Central, which travels to Tarboro on Tuesday.

routs Rosewood

LITTLEFIELD -- Holt Rains paced Rosewood with a team-high 13 points in a 74-47 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference leader Ayden-Grifton.

Taylor Allen added nine points and Stephen McIntyre provided seven for the Eagles, who fell to 3-14 overall and 1-5 in conference play. They entertain North Johnston on Tuesday.

Matt Dougherty and Tanner Carnes led three Chargers in double figures with 20 points apiece. Steffen McGhee chipped in 15 for Ayden-Grifton, which climbed to 13-5 overall and remained unbeaten in six league outings.

Wayne Christian

seizes CCC win

Adam Brannan led three players in double figures with 20 points in Wayne Christian's 69-40 trouncing of Johnston Christian at Clifford Gymnatorium on Friday evening.

T.A. Brannan and Eric Williams each contributed a double-double. Brannan scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Williams contributed 12 points and 12 boards, for the Eagles who evened their Carolina Christian 1-A Conference worksheet at 5-5.

Wayne Christian (8-9 overall) entertains Bethel Christian on Monday.

Kerr-Vance

escapes WCDS

Another state-ranked team invaded Wayne Country Day's gymnasium and proved to be a rude guest on Friday evening.

Kerr-Vance pulled away in the final stages of regulation and turned back the Chargers 83-75 on the Coastal Plain Independent 1-A Conference scene. WCDS (7-11 overall) endured its third consecutive defeat and exited with a 1-3 ledger against CPIC opposition.

Point guard Floronta Wynn delivered a double-double -- 21 points, 17 rebounds -- in the loss. Ajay Fowler added a season-high 21 points. Kyle Pender and Jeff Franklin (six rebounds) tallied 13 points apiece.

David Wilson grabbed six rebounds.

Wayne Country Day entertains Wake Christian next Tuesday.

Princeton collects

Carolina 1-A title

Gerrell Bogle emerged a triple winner and Kevin Foy seized two individual titles during the Carolina 1-A Conference men's indoor track and field championship meet contested at Rosewood.

Bogle picked up gold medals in the triple jump (41 feet, 3 inches), 55 hurdles (8.07 seconds) and 300-meter run (40.5). He earned all-conference in all three events and helped the Bulldogs capture the team title.

Foy claimed the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches) and 55-meter (6.8 seconds) titles. Bogle and Foy also participated on the winning 1,600-meter relay team. Joining them were T.J. Wilson and Tyrone Smith. Teammate Josh Holmes claimed the pole vault with a leap of 11-6.

Rosewood's Matthew Lassiter won the shot put (38-8) and teammate Casey Conerly took the 3,200-meter event. Conerly crossed the line 33 seconds head of his nearest competitor and teammate David Sass. Sass, Conerly, Ian Dillard and Cameron Lowe comprised the winning 3,200-meter relay. The foursome turned in a time of 10:06 -- 48 seconds faster than runner-up Princeton.

The Eagles' Bradly Mullens and Goss Kendall posted first-place times in the 500 meter and 1,000 meter events, respectively.

Spring Creek's Josh Lee won the long jump (18-2) and Alex Casey captured the 1,600 run in 5:39.

Princeton scored in 13 of 14 events and piled up 84 points in the team-title chase. Rosewood finished second with 78 points, followed by Spring Creek with 40.

PRINCETON -- Princeton started second-half play on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene with a 41-23 victory over Spring Creek on Friday evening.

C.C. Sanders tallied 13 points for the Dawgs, who avenged a loss against the Gators three weeks ago in Seven Springs. Tiesha Williams added 10 points and Stephanie Daughtry contributed eight points.

Tasha Whitfield paced the Gators with 10 points. Melanique DeVeaux collected eight points.

Spring Creek (2-14 overall) suffered its fourth straight conference defeat and entertains Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday. Princeton (11-9 overall) improved to 2-4 in league play and travels to North Duplin on Tuesday.

Greene Central

pounds Panthers

SNOW HILL -- Brianna Stanton collected a game-high 20 points in Greene Central's 58-27 thrashing of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival North Pitt.

Natasha Williams added nine points for the Rams, who rose to 10-9 overall and claimed sole possession of second place in the EPC at 4-2.

Greene Central travels to Tarboro on Tuesday.

falls to Bruins

WILSON -- Jazzmine Lee buried a game-high 23 points in C.B. Aycock's 67-49 loss at defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champion Wilson Beddingfield on Friday evening.

Lauren Pratt provided eight points for the Golden Falcons, who dipped to 8-12 overall and 3-3 against ECC opposition.

"The girls played hard tonight," said Aycock head coach Carrie Reynell. "We were proud of their efforts. Unfortunately, we were in foul trouble and that hurt us mentally."

Beddingfield (18-1 overall) remained unbeaten in six ECC outings.

clips Eagles

LITTLEFIELD -- Surging Ayden-Grifton carried a 13-point lead into the final quarter and escaped Rosewood 41-37 in Carolina 1-A Conference play on Friday evening.

Krystal Williams and Nicole Hyman tallied 12 points apiece for the Chargers, who improved to 6-14 overall and picked up their third conference victory in their last four tries.

Haile Meadows paced Rosewood with 11 points. Courtney Hill scored nine, followed by Kasie Braswell with eight. Shanita Monroe contributed eight points for the Eagles, who fell to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in league play.

Rosewood entertains North Johnston on Tuesday.

Best's layup

sparks Warriors

DUDLEY -- Hassan Best converted the game-winning layup as time expired and Eastern Wayne escaped archrival Southern Wayne 77-76 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action Friday afternoon.

Patrick Anderson drained two free throws and gave the Saints a 76-75 advantage with 6.8 seconds remaining in regulation. The Warriors inbounded the ball and Rashid Williams threw a pass from midcourt to Best, who slipped as his game-winning shot rolled through the net.

Best and Williams led four Eastern Wayne players in double figures with 16 points apiece. Cody Kirkham added 11, while T.J. Worrells contributed 10.

Javaris McMillian emerged the Saints' top scorer with a game-high 19 points. Silonte Thompson chipped in 14 points, while Keron Ward delivered a 13-point outing.

Eastern Wayne (7-9 overall, 3-3 ECC) entertains Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Goldsboro falls

at the buzzer

Iveon Sprangle missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and Goldsboro High dropped a 50-49 decision to Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival Tarboro High.

The Vikings missed the front end of a one-and-one situation, which set up Sprangle's game-winning attempt. Sprangle finished with 10 points, while Tyquan Sprangle scored a team-high 13.

Goldsboro (6-12 overall, 2-4 EPC) visits Farmville Central on Tuesday.

drops CCC game

Chase King recorded a double-double -- 19 points, 16 rebounds -- in Wayne Christian's 49-37 loss to Johnston Christian on the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference scene Friday afternoon.

Chase Darden added 14 points for the Eagles, who could not recover from an eight-point deficit in the opening quarter. Josiah Davis added four points.

Derek Brewington led Johnston Christian with 28 points.

Wayne Christian (7-5 overall) dropped to 2-3 in CCC play and entertains Northwood Temple on Monday.

EPC 2-A victory

TARBORO -- Tiffany Pearsall led four Goldsboro players in double figures with 13 points, but host Tarboro High managed to hang on for a 50-46 victory Friday afternoon.

LaQuita Holmes and Ashley Thompson added 11 points apiece for the Cougars, who fell to 5-12 overall and 1-3 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play. Lakiyah Campbell notched 10 points.

Goldsboro travels to North Lenoir next Friday.

Wayne Christian

gets another win

Charity Wright paced Wayne Christian with a 13-point outing and the Eagles easily dismantled Johnston Christian 47-22 at Clifford Gymnatorium on Friday evening.

Hanna Kaler and Kaitlyn Kosuda added 11 and nine points, respectively, for the Eagles.

Carly Hightower, Kayla Kennedy and Summer Brathwaite also scratched in the scoring column.

Wayne Christian (8-2 overall) remained unbeaten in four Carolina Christian 1-A Conference games, and plays host to New Life Camp on Tuesday.

Justin Ayers scored 14 points in Southern Wayne's 70-43 victory over archrival and Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Eastern Wayne.

Cory Bell led the Warriors with 12 points, while teammate Josh Cody added 10.

The Saints, directed by first-year coach Johnny Galarza, improved to 10-4 overall.

Middle schools

Brogden girls 30, Spring Creek 26 -- Brogden's Jamika Bowen scored 13 points, while teammate Qualanda Mathis added eight points and 11 rebounds. The Rams improved to 4-7 overall and will entertain Grantham on Feb. 1.
