Raiford, Williams spearhead Gators' victory on Carolina 1-A Conference scene

CALYPSO -- Desmund Raiford and Dekevius Williams combined to shoot better than 50 percent from the floor in Spring Creek's 75-46 conquest of archrival North Duplin.

Raiford tallied a game-high 13 points on 6 of 13 shooting from the floor and pulled down seven rebounds. Williams converted 5 of 8 field goals for 10 points, and added four rebounds.

Daniel Correll and David Harris pumped in eight points apiece. Harris and senior point guard Josh Wright each dished out six assists. Lucas Potter provided six points and seven rebounds.

Overall, 11 Gators scratched in the scoring column.

"(Our) best game so far," said Spring Creek head coach Sonny Kilpatrick. "We had balanced scoring and good help-side defense."

Desi Smith and Chris Graham emerged North Duplin's top scorers with 11 points apiece. Brian McDuffy added eight.

The Rebels, who travel to Rosewood next Tuesday, remained winless in 10 outings overall and 0-4 against Class 1-A Carolina Conference opposition.

Spring Creek (4-11 overall, 2-2 Carolina) entertains North Johnston next Tuesday.

Quartet sparks

Conquerors' victory

T.J. Sasser tickled the twine for a game-high 28 points and Faith Christian throttled Gateway (Va.) Christian 75-57 on Saturday afternoon.

Sasser converted 7 of 9 free throw attempts and Aaron Sladick added 18 points for the Conquerors, who improved to 15-1 overall. Taylor Stocks contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

Jeremy Sandlin recorded 13 rebounds and five points.

Faith Christian puts its 14-game win streak on the line Tuesday at N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A rival Falls Road Baptist of Rocky Mount.

Princeton holds

on in Carolina play

PRINCETON -- Rosewood exploded for 27 third-quarter points and erased a double-digit deficit, but Princeton survived 74-65 on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Friday evening.

Ryan Daughtry led four Bulldogs in double figures with 23 points, including 19 in the first half. Josh Barefoot shot 8 of 8 at the free throw line and finished with 14 points, while Will Gainey contributed 13. Daniel Gerrell rounded out the double-figure scoring with 11.

Rosewood's Stephen McIntyre and Dennis Jones shared team-high scoring honors with 17 points apiece. Adrian Dahnraj added 11 points for the Eagles, who dipped to 3-12 overall and 1-3 in Carolina Conference play.

The Bulldogs (13-5 overall) grabbed a 25-6 lead after one quarter and extended their advantage to 22 points by halftime. The Eagles answered with their third-quarter outburst and trimmed their archrival's lead to three points.

Princeton coach Jeff Davis said his team "managed to hold on" and concluded the night 22 for 28 at the free throw line. The Bulldogs remained unbeaten in four league outings and travel to league co-leader Ayden-Grifton next Wednesday.

Rosewood entertains North Duplin on Tuesday.

Kinston rolls

over E. Wayne

KINSTON -- Donovan Ingram led a balanced Kinston offensive attack with 15 points in an 80-59 rout of Eastern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Friday evening.

Curtis Hines added 13 points and Reggie Bullock tallied 12 points. Akeem Sutton, Bo Ingram and Quinton Coples provided 10 points apiece. The Vikings, ranked No. 4 in the latest NCPreps.com 3-A poll, improved to 16-2 overall and 3-1 against ECC opposition.

The Warriors' D.J. Cowan delivered a game-high 20 points, including 12 from 3-point range. Will White pumped in 14 points, while Lamar Davis contributed 10 points and seven assists.

Eastern Wayne (3-11 overall) dipped to 1-3 in the ECC and entertains county rival Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.

W. Country Day

suffers CPIC loss

WILSON -- Brian Richardson notched a team-high 25 points and Greenfield defeated Wayne Country Day 63-61 to remain unbeaten on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference scene.

The Knights, the defending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state champions, improved to 13-12 overall and 2-0 in the league. The loss snapped the Chargers' three-game win streak as they exited 7-9 overall and 1-2 in CPIC play.

Junior point guard Floronta Wynn pumped in a game-high 31 points for WCDS. Senior Jeff Franklin added 11 points, and Kyle Pender scored eight points.

The Chargers, who missed the game-tying basket with five seconds left in regulation, entertain Trinity-Fayetteville next Tuesday.

Girls

Billups' jumper

lifts EW in overtime

KINSTON -- Six-foot-1 forward Brittani Billups nailed the game-winning jumper in overtime and Eastern Wayne escaped Kinston 48-46 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action.

The Vikings forced an up-tempo game in the second half and outscored the Warriors 26-22 to force overtime.

"We just didn't take care of the basketball at the end and they got some steals," said Eastern Wayne head coach Brent Holland. "We're still learning and young at spots. We didn't run clock management very well."

Billups scored with 4.8 seconds left in the extra session and lifted the Warriors to their second road win in their last three tries. The junior finished with a triple-double -- 17 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

Yasmine Washington delivered a double-double -- 14 points, 13 rebounds. Eboni Reid dished out six assists.

Felicia Dunn led the Vikings with 14 points. Adrienne Lewis added 11, while Sherita Gooding and Troysheika Shaw tallied seven points apiece.

Eastern Wayne (6-8 overall, 3-1 ECC) plays host to county rival C.B. Aycock next Tuesday. Kinston (4-11, 1-3 ECC) faces defending 3-A state champion Wilson Beddingfield the same evening.

North Duplin

notches first win

CALYPSO -- Jodie Williamson collected a game-high 16 points and North Duplin ended its eight-game skid with a 40-35 victory over achrival Spring Creek.

The Rebels improved to 1-8 overall and 1-3 in Carolina 1-A Conference play. The Gators (2-13 overall) suffered their third consecutive league defeat in four outings.

Jessica Pridgen complemented Williamson with 12 points.

Melanique DeVeaux paced Spring Creek's offense with a game-high 16 points. Maura Phipps added seven. Shaquita Brooks and Errica Evans scored four points apiece.

North Duplin travels to Rosewood on Tuesday, while Spring Creek plays host to North Johnston.

past So. Wayne

DUDLEY -- Tyheim Pitt poured in a game-high 26 points in C.B. Aycock's 55-52 victory over county and Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Southern Wayne.

Kyle LaFlamme provided 10 points for the Golden Falcons.

C.B. Aycock (6-12, 2-2 ECC) concludes first-half league play Tuesday at Eastern Wayne. Tip-off is 4:30 p.m.

Rosewood slips

past archrival

Zack Mangum dropped in a team-high eight points and Rosewood outlasted archrival Princeton 32-29 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Friday afternoon.

Joseph Willis and Terrence Toran each scored seven points for the Eagles.

Rosewood (3-12, 1-3 Carolina) plays host to North Duplin on Tuesday.

Chargers pull

out CPIC victory

WILSON -- Brandon Davis sizzled the nets for 22 points in Wayne Country Day's nail-biting 42-40 victory over Greenfield in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play Friday afternoon.

Vaughn Eason contributed eight points in the road win.

"It was a hardfought game," said WCDS coach Jared Cogdell. "We were happy to come of there with a win."

Wayne Country Day (8-7 overall, 2-3 CPIC) entertains Trinity-Fayetteville on Tuesday.

Faith Christian

tops Gateway

Drew Floars turned in a 19-point effort in Faith Christian's 46-41, non-conference victory over Gateway (Va.) Christian on Saturday afternoon.

Brad Floars scored 14 points.

Faith Christian (11-1 overall) is the guest of N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A Coastal foe Falls Road Baptist on Tuesday.

rout county rival

PIKEVILLE -- Nine players scored at least one point or more in C.B. Aycock's 56-23 trouncing of county rival Southern Wayne on Friday afternoon.

"Every break of a huddle we chant 'unity' and we finally played unified," said Aycock coach Christina Pijanowski. "(It was) an all-around team effort."

Caroline Schlaeppi provided a game-high 21 points for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 5-9 overall and 2-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play. Paige Garrett added 10 points.

Shonica Ingram led the Saints with 11 points, while Marketa Bizzell chipped in 10.

C.B. Aycock entertains Eastern Wayne on Tuesday. Tip-off is 4:30 p.m.

W. Country Day

defeats St. Mary's

Jessica Lewis' double-double led the Wayne Country Day Chargers to a 26-6 win over St. Mary's on Thursday evening.

The victory improves WCDS to 7-6 (3-4) on the season.

topples E. Duplin

BEULAVILLE -- Lorenzo Alford poured in a game-high 13 points in Southern Wayne's 67-59, non-conference victory over East Duplin.

Justin Artis added 12 points for the Saints.

Southern Wayne improved to 9-3 overall.

Middle schools

Wake Christian boys 46, Wayne Christian 29 -- Anthony Mulligan and Chase King emerged the Eagles' top scorers with nine points apiece in Friday afternoon's non-conference road loss. Chase Darden added six points for Wayne Christian, which fell to 6-3 overall.

Greenfield boys 34, Wayne Country Day 25 -- Thomas Elmore, Douglas Williams and Bryce Creger scored six points apiece for the Chargers. Wayne Country Day dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play.

Wayne Country Day School boys 33, St. Mary's 19 -- Russell Turner collected 11 points and Hil Tanner chipped in eight during the Chargers' non-conference victory. Wayne Country Day improved to 3-4 overall.

Norwayne girls 28, Mount Olive 24 -- Courtney Gilbert provided nearly one-third (nine points) of the Cobras' offense in their Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference non-division game. Norwayne (9-1 overall) plays host to Dillard on Jan. 25.

Greenwood girls 22, Grantham 12 -- Shamora Worrell paced the T-Bird offense with eight points and Greenwood remained unbeaten in six WCMSAC Division II outings. The T-Birds (6-2 overall) entertain Rosewood on Jan. 25.
