Dobbin honors promise of avoiding foul trouble

DUDLEY -- Charles B. Aycock's Jasmine Dobbin told her coach, Carrie Reynell, that she was not going to foul out for the fourth straight game and she was going to be more assertive on offense.

Dobbin's prediction became reality as she scored a team-high 15 points and stayed out of foul trouble to help lead the Golden Falcons to a 59-42 road victory over Southern Wayne in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action Friday night.

Dobbin also added nine rebounds and five steals to her stat sheet.

"When she makes those kinds of commitments she's going to spill her guts trying -- she's all heart," said Reynell.

Dobbin's contribution wasn't alone as nine other Golden Falcon players tallied points.

"It was a great team effort," said Reynell. "Even when we put some of the girls in who hadn't been getting a lot of playing time, they did the things we've been working on."

Chantel Gaines also had a big game for Aycock, scoring 10 points to go with eight rebounds and five steals.

While Reynell got the type of effort she desires, Southern Wayne coach Chuck Crumpler got just the opposite from his girls. The Saints had another rough night handling the ball and shooting as they committed 27 turnovers and shot 10 of 25 from the foul line.

"The same thing again ... free throws," Crumpler said. "You work on them every day. You work on them in practice, but you don't execute."

Shakoria Clark led the Saints with a game-high 19 points while Lynneshia Leonard added nine with seven rebounds and four steals.

Southern Wayne fell behind early and was never able to get on track at either end. Dobbin and Gaines scored nine quick points as Aycock built a 11-3 first-quarter lead.

The Saints put together a little 6-2 spurt following 3-pointers from Leonard and Clark to cut the lead to 13-9. That, however, would be the closest Southern Wayne would get the rest of the night. Aycock's man-to-man defense and traps forced three straight turnovers which became an 8-0 run to close the quarter.

"We made some lucky gambles and it kind of fell our way," said Reynell of her team's defense.

Things only became worse for the Saints as the Golden Falcons' advantage grew to 37-16 heading into the locker room at halftime. Six straight points by Aycock at the start of the third period gave the Golden Falcons their biggest lead of the night at 43-16.

Reynell then began to empty her bench.

The Saints took advantage of the less-experienced players on the court in the final quarter by outscoring the Golden Falcons 20-12. The Southern Wayne defense forced 12 Aycock turnovers in the quarter.

"We had some lapses there at the end," said Reynell.

The one bad quarter wasn't enough to keep the Golden Falcons from improving to 7-11 overall and 2-2 in ECC play. The loss left the Saints winless (0-4) in the conference and 7-9 overall.

"We didn't come to play," Crumpler sighed. "It was obvious to everyone out there."

The final game of the evening was another lopsided affair, but this time the home crowd had something to celebrate as the Southern Wayne boys set a season-high point total by beating C.B. Aycock 91-63.

"We were in desperate need of this win," said Southern Wayne coach Russell Royal. "It was definitely a good night all the way around."

Anthony Vick showed that he needs to shoot the ball more as he drained four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points while pulling down nine rebounds.

"Anthony is a very unselfish player," said Royal. "I've actually had times where I have to strangle him to get him to shoot it. He's a great shooter with really good accuracy, but he's sometimes too unselfish."

In all 14 different Saints scored on Friday night. Paris Armwood also reached double figures with 11 points for Southern Wayne, which improved to 8-8 overall and notched its second league win of the season in four tries.

"It was a chance where everyone got to play a good amount of minutes so we can now evaluate them for future games," said Royal.

Aycock (0-18, 0-4) got 14 points from Kendre Reid and 10 points along with four assists from David Gurganus.

"David's a freshman coming from middle school to 3-A basketball and that's not a step -- it's a leap," said Aycock coach David West. "I think he's handled it very well. He's going to get nothing but better.

Southern Wayne jumped on the Golden Falcons early on and never let up. The Saints led 11-0 three minutes into the game and by 43-21 at the half.

Southern Wayne's shooters were constantly able to get open looks by getting kick-outs from the Saint backcourt enabling them to knock down nine 3-pointers.

On defense the Saints' full-court press forced 24 turnovers, but even so, the number could have been much higher. Gurganus used his passing and speed to pass and maneuver through traps.

"Their guards played it well," said Royal.

Every time Aycock seemed to put together a couple of good possessions, it would have multiple bad ones that would follow.

"We play decent ball for 2 or 3 minutes a game but there's 30 minutes that we're looking for stuff," said West. "We're still trying to put things together. The problem is we aren't putting it all together at one time."

West's frustrations would grow larger in the second half as the gap increased to 30 at the end of the third quarter. In the final period, three straight treys by the Saints and a layup by Antonio Howard pushed the lead to 85-46 before winning by the final margin of 28.

"Eventually we know it will pay off," said West of his team's hard work. "I just wish it would come sooner than later.
