Sherrod hits 32 points, Tarboro upsets Goldsboro's boys

TARBORO -- Jontae Sherrod blistered the nets for a game-high 32 points and sparked Tarboro High to a 75-67 upset of Goldsboro in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.

The Cougars, the reigning EPC regular-season champions, suffered their fourth loss in their last six outings and exited 10-5 overall.

"This better serve as our wake-up call," said sixth-year Goldsboro head coach Randy Jordan. "We have to defend for 32 minutes. We just can't walk into the gym and expect to win. We have to work for it."

Goldsboro wasted a 10-point lead in the final quarter and yielded 30 points defensively to Tarboro.

"We didn't defend anything," said Jordan.

Tim Kornegay paced the Cougar offense with 24 points, while ECU signee Daquan Joyner provided 21 points and nine rebounds. Tim Hobbs contributed 10 points and nine rebounds, while Eric McLean dished out a team-leading four assists.

Goldsboro plays host to Farmville Central on Tuesday.

drops ECC opener

PIKEVILLE -- Beddingfield forced 27 turnovers out of its full-court press and cruised past Charles B. Aycock 70-41 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.

Michael King and Quantay Poole led the Golden Falcons with eight points apiece. Kendre Reid pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Mike Anderson led the Bruins (4-9, 1-0 ECC) with a game-high 19 points. Brian McNair added 17.

C.B. Aycock (0-15, 0-1) travels to Kinston on Tuesday.

Third quarter

dooms Rosewood

Rosewood trailed by just four entering the second half, but Ayden-Grifton outscored the Eagles 22-6 in the third quarter and coasted to a 66-41 win Friday night in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Holt Rains led a balanced Eagles offense with 11 points. Dennis Jones and Joey Boyette chipped in nine and eight points, respectively.

Matt Dougherty led three Chargers in double figures with 17 points. Steffen McGhee and Tanner Carnes each contributed 14 points.

Rosewood (2-9, 0-1 Carolina) visits North Johnston on Tuesday.

Greene Central

tops North Pitt

BETHEL -- Greene Central opened its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference slate with a 53-48 conquest of North Pitt on Friday evening.

Albert Barron led the Rams, the reigning EPC tournament champions, with 12 points. Reggie Johnson added 10.

Greene Central (9-5, 1-0 EPC) plays again Tuesday.

CPIC play with loss

HENDERSON -- Short-handed Wayne Country Day stayed within striking distance in the opening half, but wore down as the game progressed during Friday evening's 78-59 loss at Kerr-Vance Academy.

It was the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

First-year Wayne Country Day coach Mike Ellis felt a little lonely on the bench Friday evening. Working with just one substitute, the Charger head coach could only watch as his team slowly wilted under the Spartans' relentless style of play.

"We wore down under their full-court, man-to-man defense," said Ellis. "It was rapid scoring ... a really fast-paced game. Sometimes in our zone press we'd slow them down and sometimes they'd just blow right through it.

"We really got kind of winded in the fourth quarter."

The Chargers (4-7, 0-1 CPIC) surrendered 23 fourth-quarter points and 43 total in the second half. Kerr-Vance, ranked among the state's top five teams, led 35-32 at halftime.

Jeff Franklin led WCDS with 18 points and six rebounds. Floronta Wynn provided 17 points. Kyle Pender added eight points and five rebounds. Shadoe Stewart contributed seven points and six rebounds, while Ajay Fowler dished out four assists.

Wayne Country Day entertains Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday.

North Duplin

KENLY -- Chris Graham and Doug Lloyd each turned in double-figure efforts in North Duplin's 60-57 loss at North Johnston on Friday evening.

It was the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Graham provided 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Lloyd delivered two 3-pointers and finished with 13 points overall.

Willie Pearce led the Panthers, who picked up their second consecutive victory, with 18 points.

North Duplin (0-5, 0-1 Carolina) travels to Princeton on Tuesday, while North Johnston welcomes Rosewood.

Goldsboro's lead

dwindles in fourth

TARBORO -- Tarboro High converted turnovers and offensive rebounds into crucial points in the fourth quarter and seized a come-from-behind, 45-40 victory over Goldsboro High.

It was the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener for both teams.

Goldsboro led by six points midway through the final period until the Vikings erased the deficit.

"We started turning the ball over," said Cougars head coach Brandy Smith. "We had three key missed box-outs on free throws that Tarboro was able to get and convert.

"(But) it was a pretty good game and I saw a lot of improvement on our part."

Senior center Carmille Early posted a double-double -- 20 points, 11 rebounds, and blocked five shots for the Cougars. Zeara McDuffie added eight points, four rebounds and five steals. Danielle Irby scored six points.

"Carmille played very well and with confidence," said Smith. "We struggled getting other people involved in the offense."

Goldsboro (2-12, 0-1 EPC) entertains Farmville Central, the defending N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state champion, on Tuesday.

Rosewood toiled through an off-shooting night and opened defense of its Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season title with a 27-20 conquest of Ayden-Grifton on Friday evening.

Kasie Braswell emerged the Eagles' top scorer with seven points, while Haley Meadows added six. Courtney Hill tallied five points. Shanita Monroe and Ashley Williams each collected four points.

The Eagles (5-6, 1-0) visit North Johnston, the defending Carolina tournament champion, on Tuesday.

Warriors claim

non-league thriller

Eastern Wayne and South Central battled to a deadlock after 14 individual matches, but the Warriors prevailed 43-42 based on the seventh criteria -- first points scored -- in non-conference action Friday evening.

The Warriors notched the first point in seven of the 13 contested bouts, while the Falcons scored first on six occasions.

Eastern Wayne (9-2) trailed 42-30 heading into the 215-pound match. Senior Brandon Johnson, a returning state placer, needed five-plus minutes to pin South Central's Matt Stoeckle. Fellow Warrior Foy Coley claimed a disqualification at heavyweight to complete the stalemate.

Jordan Harris (112 pounds), Chris Tesar (119), James Knight (130), A.J. Washington (135) and Detori Mitchell (140) each claimed a pin for Eastern Wayne.

South Central collected three falls and a forfeit until Johnson started the Warriors' comeback.

Eastern Wayne entertains Eastern Carolina 3-A rival Wilson Beddingfield next Tuesday. A victory assures the Warriors of no worse than a second-place finish in the five-team league.

"It was a disappointing loss for us and I thought we'd do better than we did," said Spring Creek head coach Dwight Glenn. "Some of our rookies on the team didn't quite perform as well as I thought they would."

Neal O'Hara, Paul Richter, Daquan Wright and Ross Montafia each posted a pin for the Gators. Heavyweight Dwight Strickland won by decision. Daniel Richter and Matt Richter each received a forfeit.

Goldsboro High remained unbeaten in 2007 with back-to-back victories within a 24-hour period.

Quantiago Holloman and Michael Langston each posted a double-double in the Cougars' 75-58, non-conference victory over East Duplin on Saturday morning. Holloman delivered 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Langston provided 10 points and 10 assists.

Demetrio Irby narrowly missed a double-double with a game-high 25 points and nine assists. Michael Thevenin contributed 10 points.

"Lamar Hicks played tough defense and helped shut down their main scorer," said Goldsboro head coach Al Southerland.

Thevenin sank the game-winning shot at the buzzer in Friday's 55-53, non-conference victory over New Bern.

Irby collected a team-high 24 points. Chris Suggs and Michael Langston chipped in eight and seven points, respectively. Holloman dominated the boards with 11 rebounds.

Goldsboro (4-7) carries a three-game win streak into Tuesday's non-conference contest at county rival Eastern Wayne.

Middle schools

Wayne Christian boys 42, Bethel Christian 21 -- Chase Darden scored 12 points and Jordan Crouthamel added 11 to help lead Wayne Chrisian to the victory. The Wayne Christian defense limited Bethel Christian to just four points in the first half while scoring 22 off steals and in transition. Wayne Christian (6-2) plays host to Wake Christian on Jan. 19 at 4:30 p.m.

Eastern Wayne boys 65, Brogden 26 -- Eastern Wayne improved to a perfect 7-0 this season with the victory. The Warriors got 17 points from Jonathan Midgette and 13 from Jamal Broadie. Lamar Best added six points, six steals and five assists for Eastern Wayne. The Warriors travel to Norwayne on Monday.
