Nethercutt's jumper lifts Princeton past Midway

PRINCETON -- Adam Nethercutt buried the game-winning jumper with 1.5 seconds left as Princeton nipped Midway 55-53 in non-conference play Tuesday evening.

Nethercutt finished with seven points for the Bulldogs, who improved to 7-4 overall heading into today's home game against Hobbton.

Josh Holmes posted a double-double -- 17 points, 10 rebounds, and Ryan Daughtry contributed 16 points. Daniel Gerrell provided 14 points and eight rebounds.

Keegan Warren led Midway (4-5) with 18 points. Bryce Fairchild chipped in 11 points, while Chris Boone scored 10.

Gryphon offense

erupts in 2nd half

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount used first- and second-half runs to snapped Goldsboro High's eight-game win streak in an 86-76, non-conference victory Tuesday evening.

The Gryphons trimmed the Cougars' lead to single digits with a 7-0 run in the second quarter. Goldsboro led 41-32 at halftime, but saw that advantage evaporate in the third quarter.

Rocky Mount used a 16-0 run as the springboard to a 30-point, third-quarter outburst. The Gryphons, of the NEW 6 Athletic 3-A Conference, outscored the Cougars 54-35 in the second half.

"Simply put, we did not defend," said Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan. "We allow just 56 points a game and we gave up 54 in the second half. We'll go back to work today, refocus and re-dedicate ourselves on the defensive end.

"We will get better by Thursday night."

Tim Kornegay blistered the nets for a game-high 32 points. Daquan Joyner added 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Tim Hobbs contributed 14 points.

Tashawn Mabry led four Gryphons in double figures with 29 points. Montrell Battle, Matt Cooper and Alonzo Sharpe each scored 13.

Goldsboro (8-2) plays host to Smithfield-Selma on Thursday.

Fighting Knights

upend Falcons

PIKEVILLE -- Visiting Northern Nash seized a double-digit lead by halftime and eased past Charles B. Aycock 66-47 in non-conference action Tuesday evening.

Brian Thomas emerged the Knights' top scorer with 21 points.

Michael King spearheaded a balanced Golden Falcon attack with nine points, while Jacob Pendleton scored eight.

"We're being outscored, but it's because we're giving up too many third, fourth and fifth chances on possessions," said Aycock coach David West. "Once we start limiting everybody to one shot for the most part and limiting our turnovers, then we're going to be a team that can compete.

"Right now, that's our Achilles' heel."

C.B. Aycock (0-12) entertains Greene Central today.

Eagles endure

non-league loss

CLINTON -- Taylor Allen led Rosewood's offense with 14 points in a 75-41, non-conference loss at unbeaten Union on Tuesday afternoon.

Tyler Muntz added eight points for the Eagles, who fell to 1-7 overall.

Brent Graham led the Spartans with 22 points, while Frederick Davis provided 13.

Rosewood travels to James Kenan on Jan. 2.

North Duplin

drops two games

ROSEBORO -- Doug Lloyd and Daniel Cates pumped in 14 points apiece in North Duplin's 80-61, non-conference loss at Lakewood on Tuesday evening.

Chris Graham added 13 for the Rebels, who let a slim three-point halftime lead slip away in the second half.

Marcus Graham poured in a game-high 27 points for the Leopards, who outscored the Rebels 54-32 in the second half. Eric Williams added 10, while Zack Faircloth and Tyre Smith each provided eight points.

Unbeaten Union raced to a 20-point lead after eight minutes of action and cruised past North Duplin 94-55 on Monday evening.

Doug Lloyd emerged the Rebels' top scorer with 16 points. Desi Smith and Chris Graham each provided nine points. Ryan Killette and Brian McDuffy each chipped in five.

North Duplin (0-4) returns the hardwood at home Jan. 3 against Union.

Girls

Goldsboro High

dealt road defeat

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount exploded for 36 first-quarter points and rolled past Goldsboro High 80-42 on Tuesday evening.

"We did not take care of the basketball at all and committed quite a few turnovers," said first-year Cougars coach Brandy Smith. "We didn't handle the pressure very well and it certainly didn't help that they scored 36 points in the first quarter.

"The second half was pretty even, but by that time, it was a done deal."

Goldsboro held the Gryphons, of the NEW 6 Athletic Conference, to 31 points in the second half and scored 28.

Danielle Irby paced the Cougars' attack with 13 points and five steals. Zeara McDuffie contributed eight points and five rebounds. Tiffany Burden added six points and five rebounds.

Millicent Kornegay pulled down four boards and Kiana Williams dished out six assists.

Dyonna Battle led three Rocky Mount players in double figures with 24 points. Stephanie Allen delivered an 18-point outing, while Arkeneisha Melton tallied 12.

Goldsboro (0-9) entertains Smithfield-Selma on Thursday.

C.B. Aycock

captures victory

PIKEVILLE -- Chantel Gaines sizzled the nets for a season-high 23 points and C.B. Aycock turned back Northern Nash 40-34 on Tuesday evening.

Lauren Pratt and Bridgette Briggs scored six and five points, respectively, for the Golden Falcons. Jasmine Dobbin added four points and three steals.

"The girls played great defense tonight; the best they've played all season," said Aycock head coach Carrie Reynell. "We weren't so sharp on the other end, though. We didn't play the smartest on offense tonight.

"Chantel stepped up tonight and had a great game offensively."

Donneka Whitehead and Nikki Battle scored 13 and 9 points, respectively, for the Knights.

Hill, Monroe

lead Eagles' attack

CLINTON -- Courtney Hill and Shanita Monroe each posted a double-figure scoring effort in Rosewood's 48-37, non-conference loss against Union on Tuesday evening.

Hill tallied 13 points and Monroe added 12 for the Eagles, who slipped to 2-8 overall. Kasie Braswell and Ashley Williams each scored four points.

Rosewood (2-6) is the guest of James Kenan on Jan. 2.

Southern Wayne

edges W.-Rose Hill

TEACHEY -- Lynneshia Leonard led two Southern Wayne players in double figures with 17 points in a 50-47, non-conference triumph over Wallace-Rose Hill on Tuesday evening.

Shakoria Clark added 14 points and Brianna Lofton chipped in seven for the Saints, who improved to 5-4 overall.

"We came out in the second half, played a tough man-to-man press and went on a 10-0 run," said Southern Wayne coach Chuck Crumpler. "But we just didn't shut the door on them. The game was physical on both sides and Wallace would not give up."

The Bulldogs, of the Super Six 1-A ranks, trailed 38-27 after three quarters. However, they outscored the Saints 20-12 in the final eight minutes of regulation.

"Lynneshia, Shakoria and Brianna are keeping us in the games with their scoring," said Crumpler. "But all 11 of the girls are working well on defense to give those three scoring opportunities."

The teams meet again Jan. 3 in Dudley.

ROSEBORO -- Jodie Williamson emerged North Duplin's top scorer in a 36-26, non-conference loss Tuesday evening against Lakewood.

Samantha Cates and Rebecca Coats each scored six points.

PIKEVILLE -- Humbled by a lopsided double-digit loss less than a week ago in Red Oak, C.B. Aycock gained revenge against Northern Nash on Tuesday afternoon.

Tyheim Pitt led three Golden Falcons in double figures with 17 points in a 54-43, non-conference victory. Pitt also grabbed nine rebounds.

Kyle LaFlamme and RaJohn Ormond provided 13 and 11 points, respectively.
