WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock opened defense of its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference dual-team championship with a 56-13 dismantling of Wilson Hunt on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Falcons, who remained unbeaten in three outings, secured falls in six individual bouts and prevailed in 10 of 13 contested matches overall.

"It is always good to get that first conference win out of the way," said Aycock coach Kevin Smith. "Every individual match is critical because it has an effect on the seeding at the conference tournament, so we moved some kids around tonight so that our young kids matched up with their younger kids.

"Hunt is getting better every week and will definitely make some noise before the season is over with."

Aycock heavyweight Khiry Reid started the night with a 3-1, double-overtime decision. Hunt won the next two matches to gain a 9-3 advantage in the overall match score.

The Golden Falcons' Drake Gurley scored a tight decision at 125 pounds and Joseph Conner collected his first-ever ECC win at 130 pounds. The Warriors stayed within striking distance with a victory at 135, but Aycock uncorked a match-clinching 44-0 run behind veteran Ngu Tran.

Tran, who wrestled at 135 pounds, picked up a technical fall. Ronald Lynn (140), Kevin Carmel (145) and Bryant Lancaster (152) each followed with a pin.

Josh Grimes (160) earned a decision and Steve Bentley (171) pinned his opponent in 58 seconds. Gabriel Huang earned his first-ever ECC victory at 189 and 215-pounder Jarrett Covar received a match-ending forfeit.

"We were able to get some first-year guys on the mat today which will help us down the road," said Smith. "We are progressing, but I still feel like we have to continue to get better on our feet.

"At time we were a little sloppy from the neutral position, so that will be our focus tomorrow."
