DUDLEY -- Despite sustaining a season-ending ACL injury, Southern Wayne tailback Anthony Council emerged the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference Player of the Year.

Council accumulated 1,557 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns until the injury sidelined him the week of the Wilson Hunt game. Council averaged 194.6 yards per outing and is close to 4,000 yards for his career.

Joining Council on the ECC All-Conference squad were teammates Tristan Bass and Kelvin Flow.

Senior linebacker Brandon Johnson helped Eastern Wayne record its best season since 1997 and grabbed a spot on the ECC All-Conference list. He is joined by Kendrick Best, Adrian Black and Nolan Lancaster.

Dontay Taylor, the area's top rushing leader in terms of total yards, drew All-ECC recognition for Charles B. Aycock. Teammates Thomas Pilkington, the area's top quarterback, and linebacker Travis Milligan also picked up All-ECC accolades.

Regular-season co-champions Wilson Hunt and Wilson Beddingfield each received seven all-conference selections, while Kinston had two. Hunt seized the league's sportsmanship award while Beddingfield's Tyrone Johnson was named coach of the year.
