CVAC men's, women's soccer Final Four to be played today, Saturday at MOC

Trojan Field is the site this weekend for the "final four" of the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men's and Women's Soccer Tournaments, hosted by Mount Olive College.

Both Trojan teams advanced to the semifinals with first-round victories. In the women's tournament, No. 3 seed Mount Olive defeated No. 6 seed Barton 4-0 Tuesday. In the men's tournament, the seventh-seeded Trojans stunned No. 2 seed and defending champion Belmont Abbey 1-0 Wednesday.

The women's soccer semifinals get underway today as top-seeded Queens takes on No. 4 seed Pfeiffer at noon. Queens came from behind to defeat No. 8 seed Lees-McRae 4-2 in the first round, while Pfeiffer nipped fifth-seeded Limestone 1-0. Queens defeated Pfeiffer 1-0 last Saturday in a match that decided the regular season championship.

At 2:30 p.m., Mount Olive will face No. 2 seed Belmont Abbey in a rematch of last year's championship game, won by Belmont Abbey 1-0. The Trojans fell to the Crusaders 2-1 October 12 at Belmont, N.C. Belmont Abbey, which shut out No. 7 seed Erskine 2-0 in the first round, is the only CVAC team that Trojan fourth-year head coach Chris Shaw has not beaten.

The women's championship will be decided Saturday at 3 p.m. Mount Olive has reached the championship game in each of the last two years, winning the CVAC title in 2004.

The men's semifinals begin Saturday morning as No. 1 seed Queens faces No. 4 seed St. Andrews at 10 a.m.. Queens is ranked No. 23 in the NSCAA/Adidas Division II Men's Soccer Top 25, but St. Andrews handed the Royals one of their two conference losses this season.

Both teams needed more than 90 minutes to get past the first round. Queens survived a penalty kick shootout against No. 8 seed Anderson after the two teams went scoreless through regulation and two overtime periods. St. Andrews needed a penalty kick in the sixth minute of overtime to defeat No. 5 seed Pfeiffer.

At 12:30 p.m., the Trojans take on No. 3 seed Limestone, which defeated No. 6 seed Lees-McRae 4-0 in the first round. Mount Olive fell to Limestone 1-0 in September at Trojan Field. Limestone was ranked as high as No. 8 in the NSCAA Top 25.

The championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. Mount Olive won the title in 2004.

Tickets are $5 per day for single-day passes or $12 for all-session passes.

The 2006 All-CVAC Teams will be announced tonight, as well as the All-Time CVAC Men's and Women's Soccer Teams.
