North Johnston offense explodes in final quarter

PRINCETON -- North Johnston erupted for 20 fourth-quarter points and turned back county rival Princeton 34-3 in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play Friday evening.

The Panthers (6-3) forced four turnovers and returned one for a touchdown en route to eighth consecutive victory against Carolina opposition -- and third this season.

Princeton (2-7) remained winless in three league outings.

Colin Parker staked the Dawgs to a 3-0 lead on a 21-yard field goal late in the opening quarter. Willie Pearce quickly answered with a 4-yard touchdown run for the Panthers, who reeled off 34 consecutive points.

"We were right in it until the fourth quarter and it blew up on us," said Princeton coach Russell Williamson. "We were playing pretty well, especially on defense. (But) too many turnovers and a long kickoff return gave them a short field for one score.

"That hurt us."

Gerrell Bogle paced the Dawgs' ground attack with 80 yards on 26 totes.

Quarterback Michael Radford completed four passes for 30 yards.

Princeton visits Ayden-Grifton next Friday, while North Johnston travels to Spring Creek. Each game begins at 7 p.m.
