PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock launched defense of its N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A eastern regional dual-team title with a 6-0 victory over South Central on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (14-3) improved to 17-0 in first-round playoff matches and entertain Jacksonville next Tuesday afternoon.

"We came out focused and played with a high level of intensity for the entire match," said Aycock coach Luke Vail. "It is always good to get that first playoff match behind you. The competition gets tougher every round.

"I really liked our consistency and enthusiasm today. It was a total team effort."

Raychel Batts, Kristen Prosser, Lizzie Sodoma, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett and Courtney Barnes each seized a straight-set victory in singles. Batts collected her 97th career victory with a 6-0, 6-0 rout of the Falcons' Jolisia Smith.

South Central concluded the year 6-7.

Warriors take

key doubles wins

WASHINGTON -- Eastern Wayne prevailed in two of three doubles matches and nipped Washington 5-4 in opening-round play of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs.

Tied at 3-3 after singles, the Warriors' No. 2 tandem of Mollie Musgrave-Lindsey Frederick doubled up the Pam Pack's Maddy Young-Katie Howdy 10-5. The third-seeded duo of Elizabeth Borden-Emily Northington stopped Brooke Burnette-Miranda Whitley 10-4.

Frederick, Borden and Casie Musgrave each earned a singles victory for the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne (11-3) continues dual-team playoff action next Tuesday.

WILLIAMSTON -- Williamston triumphed at No. 1 doubles and ousted Rosewood 6-1 from the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A dual-team playoffs on Wednesday afternoon.

Erica Nichols claimed the Eagles' lone win -- a 7-6 (2), 6-4 triumph over the Tigers' fourth-seeded Sarah Chesson.

Williamston's Samantha Williams-Kate Godley secured the overall match with a 10-3 win over Sidney Worrell-Jamie Andrews at No. 1 doubles.

Rosewood concluded the year 12-3.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Greene Central opened defense of its N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state championship with a 7-2 decision over Roanoke Rapids on Wednesday afternoon.

"Overall, I thought my team played pretty well, particularly considering that for all of them except for Brittany (Horton), this was their first experience in the state playoffs," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "I was particularly pleased with our doubles play today."

Horton, Sarah Beth Carraway, Elizabeth McLawhorn and Abby Sugg each claimed a singles victory. Carraway collected her team-leading 17th singles win, while Horton has 16.

The Rams swept the doubles.

Greene Central (13-6) travels to Cardinal Gibbons next Tuesday. It's a rematch of last year's second-round match won by the Rams in Snow Hill.

last-minute goal

Eastern Wayne assured itself of a N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoff bid with a 1-0 victory over Kinston on Wednesday evening at Little Big Horn.

The Warriors' Robbie Keys tallied the game-winning goal in the 79th minute off Michael Bero's assist. Eastern Wayne (7-9-2) finished 4-5-1 in Eastern Carolina Conference play and grabbed the league's final postseason berth.

Josh Olmsted and Vincent Hagedorn combined for eight saves in goal.

The teams meet again in Saturday's opening-round tournament game at Eastern Wayne.

Golden Falcons

shut out Saints

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock polished off its second consecutive Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season title with a 9-0 conquest of county rival Southern Wayne.

Five Golden Falcons found the back of the net in the regular-season finale for both teams. Rich Holder, Jorge Delgado, Kyle LaFlamme and Ryan Martin each collected two goals. Alex Roosen contributed one goal.

Keeper Jared Kennedy recorded three saves in goal.

C.B. Aycock (15-2-1, 9-1 ECC) is seeded No. 1 for the season-ending ECC tournament and plays a semifinal-round game Monday at Eastern Wayne. The Golden Falcons oppose the Eastern Wayne-Kinston winner at 7 p.m.

Southern Wayne (0-12, 0-10) drew the No. 6 seed and plays third-seeded Wilson Beddingfield (13-6-2) in a first-round match Saturday. The game time has not been announced.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Ricky Rangel notched a hat trick (three goals) in Spring Creek's 3-0 victory over Rosewood in Carolina/Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference play.

Angel Sanchez had seven saves for the Gators, who improved to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in C/T-RC play.

Paul Richter spearheaded the defense, which recorded its eighth shutout of the season.

Spring Creek concludes regular-season play next Monday at Ayden-Grifton. Rosewood (7-7-1, 2-4) travels to state-ranked North Johnston.

Vikings deny

Rams' upset bid

SNOW HILL -- Tarboro clinched a share of the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference championship with a 3-2 victory over Greene Central on Wednesday evening.

"I was real proud of the way our guys played," said Rams coach Carl Bradshaw.

Jonathan Mendez and Felipe Jimenez each tallied a goal for Greene Central. Jonathan Reyna provided one assist.

Keeper Ivan Martinez had five saves in goal.

Greene Central (7-8, 4-2 EPC) is the guest of Ayden-Grifton on Friday. Tarboro exited 17-2-1 overall and clinched the league's No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, which begin Nov. 1.

Hawks soar

past Panthers

BETHEL -- Corey Johnson scored 20 seconds into the opening half and North Lenoir dumped North Pitt 8-2 on the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference scene Wednesday evening.

Johnson, Dustin King and Ricky Jarman each scored two goals for the Hawks. C.C. Croom and Cameron Beaman added one goal apiece.

North Lenoir (8-8-2, 4-3 EPC) travels to county archrival South Lenoir next Tuesday.

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir emerged the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference tournament champion with a 16-25, 25-12, 26-24, 25-20 triumph over Farmville Central at Wooten Gymnasium.

The Hawks (18-3) grabbed their fifth EPC tournament title in the last six years and earned the No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs. The Jaguars fell into the No. 2 slot.

Senior outside hitter Brittany Sanders delivered 12 kills in the title match. Marisa Lanier contributed four kills and three blocks.

The Hawks tallied 17 and 14 points, respectively, with Kayla Sutton and Jordan Hudson on serve.

In the semifinals, North Lenoir ousted North Pitt 25-12, 25-21, 25-21.

Sanders had nine kills. Lanier and Sutton each contributed four kills.

Panthers, Jags

take EPC titles

North Pitt's boys and Farmville Central's girls claimed team titles during Wednesday's season-ending Eastern Plains 2-A Conference championship meet.

The Panther boys edged the Jaguars 36-38, with Greene Central third at 56. On the girls' side, Farmville Central easily claimed a 16-54 victory over the second-place Rams. North Lenoir (86 points), Tarboro (100) and North Pitt (107) rounded out the five-team competition.

Goldsboro's Danielle Irby finished fifth overall in 22 minutes and 28 seconds in the girls' race, and earned a spot on the all-Eastern Plains Conference team.

Led by individual champion Chelsea Tyson, Farmville Central seized the top four spots and finished with seven runners among the top 10. Greene Central's Ashley Oakes ended up sixth in 22:57.

The Jaguars' Brandon Coggins posted the boys' top time of 17:01 on the 3.1-mile course. North Pitt's Lee House and Will James took second and third, respectively.

Andrew Jarman placed sixth overall for the Rams.
