Bitzenhofer leads Trojan men to St. Andrews title

WAGRAM -- Chris Bitzenhofer, Mick Moberg and Cameron Phillips all placed in the top 10 as Mount Olive took home first place by eight strokes at the St. Andrews Men's Golf Fall Invitational at Deercroft Golf Club in Wagram. Johan Hagsund and Scott Woodard both finished among the top 18 as all five Trojans shot 77 or better in Tuesday's final round.

After carding a 1-over-par 289 in Monday's first round, the Trojans shot a 294 Tuesday to finish with a 583. Mount Olive carded the lowest team score in each of the two rounds.

Bitzenhofer finished seventh among 44 golfers with a 1-over-par 72-73--145. Phillips tied for the third lowest score of the day with a 1-under-par 71 and finished with a 75-71--146, tying for eighth place with Moberg (69-77--146). Hagsund (73-77--150) tied for 16th, while Woodard (78-73--151) tied for 18th. Woodard shot only one stroke above par over the final 27 holes.

Mount Olive was among six Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference teams in the nine-team field. Limestone finished second with a 292-299--591, one stroke ahead of Barton at 296-296--592. The tournament was hosted by St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Mount Olive returns to the links next week as the Trojans compete in the "Dogfight at the Neuse" next Monday and Tuesday. The tournament is hosted by Barton College.

Moberg, Somek

lead MOC women

WAGRAM -- Kristin Moberg placed third and Kate Somek finished fifth as Mount Olive captured first place at the St. Andrews Women's Golf Fall Invitational Tuesday at Deercroft Golf Club in Wagram, N.C. The Trojans carded a 359-359--718 as a team.

The win marks the first time in school history that Mount Olive won both the men's and women's golf titles at the same tournament.

Moberg shot an 81-86--167, while Somek carded a 91-88--179. Deborah Woodrum (94-90--184) finished seventh out of 12 golfers and Kristen Freeman (93-95--188) finished eighth.

Limestone finished second in the three-team tournament with a 732, followed by tournament host St. Andrews with a 757.

Mount Olive returns to action Oct. 8-9 as the Trojans head to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to compete in the Lenoir-Rhyne/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate.
