Rosewood men's soccer hammers Kinston, escapes Chargers

Goss Kendall notched one goal and an assist in Rosewood's 4-1, non-conference conquest of Kinston at Branch Pope Field on Tuesday evening.

Kendall assisted Connor Adams in the 18th minute, which boosted the Eagles' advantage to 2-0. Josh Davis opened the scoring with a goal just four minutes after kickoff.

Kendall scored in the 64th minute off Elliott Lee's assist. Luis Hernandez converted a penalty kick with one minute left in regulation.

Keeper Will Grantham had six saves against the Vikings, who fell to 4-7-1 overall.

Rosewood opened its Class 1-A Carolina/Tar-Roanoke Conference schedule with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Ayden-Grifton on Monday.

Trailing 2-0, Kendall converted a PK in the 66th minute. Hernandez tallied the equalizer off Kendall's assist in the 37th minute. The Eagles benefited from a game-winning "own" goal in the 39th minute.

"We got off to a slow start in the first half," said Rosewood coach Daniel Mitchell, whose team held a 20-4 advantage in shots on goal. "We kept fighting in the second half and finally found the back of the net a couple of times."

Grantham recorded two saves.

Rosewood (5-3-1) entertains Farmville Central at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Chargers suffer

CPIC 1-A defeat

Injury-riddled Wayne Country Day dipped below the .500 mark in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play with a 2-1 loss against Greenfield on Tuesday afternoon.

"With our team at about 75 percent due to injuries, we were hard-pressed to keep the pace we are used to," said WCDS coach Paul Estrada. "We had plenty of chances to score, but we were not able to capitalize on our chances.

"It's a very disappointing loss, but a loss we can learn from."

The Chargers outshot the Knights 18-9.

David Wilson tallied Wayne Country Day's lone goal on a cross from Byron Bryan.

Keeper Brandon Davis had four saves.

Wayne Country Day (8-3, 1-2 CPIC) faces Kerr-Vance on Thursday and entertains Faith Christian-Rocky Mount at 5 p.m. Friday.

Southern Wayne's Allen Bennett and Charles B. Aycock's Caroline Schlaeppi claimed the top individual times in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference dual meet contested at Waynesborough Park.

Bennett ran the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 57 seconds. The Golden Falcon boys, led by Nik Fredrick and Daniel Pennington, earned the team win 26-29.

Fredrick placed second with a time of 21:06, while Pennington crossed the finish line in 22:55. Teammates Eric Dubose and Travis Reeves rounded out Aycock's scoring with fifth- and seventh-place efforts, respectively.

Tay Wilder complemented Bennett with a fourth-place time of 22:56.

On the girls' side, the Golden Falcons received quality times from Meagan Hales (27:34), Jasmine Dobbins (29:49), Amanda Schlaeppi (30:19) and Taylor Forbes (30:21).

The Saints didn't field enough runners to produce a team score.

lead WCS runners

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Wayne Christian's Doug Johnson and Jennifer Price emerged the top runners in a three-team, non-conference meet Tuesday afternoon at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park.

Johnson covered the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 27 seconds -- nearly half a minute faster than runner-up Ryan Kelly from Spring Creek. The Eagles claimed the team win by a 23-32 count.

Price took the girls' portion of the race in 25:36. Goldsboro's Danielle Irby ended up second overall in 26:47. The Eagles' Martha Summerlin grabbed third in 28:09, while Spring Creek's Savannah Egelston finished fourth in 30 minutes.

Wayne Christian's Shelle Anderson rounded out the top five with a time of 30:30.

KINSTON -- Brittanni Billups and Anna Wilkins provided 13 and 10 kills, respectively, in Eastern Wayne's 25-11, 25-18, 25-21 victory in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match at Kinston.

Billups added five assists and four blocks for the Warriors, who improved to 8-2 overall and finished first-half conference play at 4-1. Wilkins contributed three blocks in the straight-set win.

"Kinston is real scrappy," said Eastern Wayne coach Bruce Burridge. "When we had a good attack, they'd bring the ball up. They pulled a majority of balls other teams couldn't pull up against us.

"They blocked us a couple of times."

Carly Boyette served three aces and registered three kills. Jordei Osby provided four kills and two blocks. Jasmine McLamb delivered eight kills and two blocks.

Libero Anna Hajjar led the defense with 28 digs.

Brooke Newsome dished out 28 assists.

Eastern Wayne (8-2) begins second-half ECC play Thursday at county rival Southern Wayne.

Kinston dropped to 0-5 in the league.

Hawks collect

EPC 2-A victory

SNOW HILL -- North Lenoir remained in striking distance of the Eastern Plains 2-A regular-season title with a 25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 25-13 triumph over Greene Central on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hawks (10-3, 4-1 EPC) stayed within one game of defending champion Farmville Central. The teams meet Thursday afternoon at Wooten Gymnasium.

Senior outside hitter Brittany Sanders collected nine kills and served two aces. Freshman Marisa Lanier contributed eight kills. Kayla Sutton chipped in six kills and three blocks.

North Lenoir scored 14 points each with Sutton and Sanders on serve.

Senior setter Lauren Hudson dished out 18 assists.

Conquerors

prevail at home

Setter Renee Provencal turned in a solid, all-around floor game in Faith Chrsitian's 25-12, 25-22, 25-17 conquest of Mt. Calvary on the N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region scene Tuesday.

Provencal served three aces, dished out 10 assists, pounded out two kills and recorded four digs on defense for the Conquerors. Alyssa Hill added three digs, five kills and two aces.

Rebecca Smith registered seven digs, one ace and handed out 11 assists.

"Rebecca had a great night and played very well," said Faith Christian coach Jamie Conlon.

Heather Crumpler had 10 assists, one kill and one dig. Jillian Sanders (four digs, three aces), Summer Honeycutt (three kills), Brooke Anderson (four digs, eight kills) and Katlyn Floars (two digs, six kills, one block) also contributed to the win.

"This is probably one of the best games they've played," said Conlon.

"All 13 players did a great job tonight."

Faith Christian (5-3, 5-1 NCCSA 2-A) plays host to Liberty Christian-Fayetteville next Tuesday.

Rebels upend

Gators in 4 games

CALYPSO -- North Duplin rallied from an opening-set loss to turn back Spring Creek 19-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-13 in a Carolina 1-A Conference battle Tuesday afternoon.

Heather Hudson led the Rebels with 10 kills, six digs and two blocks. Casey Pate added seven kills, three aces and four digs. Brittany Carr contributed four kills, seven aces and seven digs.

Vanessa Lynch dished out a team-high 17 assists to go along with two kills and three aces. Julie Ivey handed out three assists.

North Duplin (8-2, 3-2 Carolina) begins second-half conference play at home Thursday against North Johnston.

Goldsboro drops

Goldsboro remained winless in five Eastern Plains 2-A Conference outings with a 25-11, 25-21, 25-20 loss against North Pitt on Tuesday.

"The girls are playing better again," said first-year Cougars coach Rhet Potter.

Tiffany Burden served an ace and recorded a block. Jerrica Cole added an ace, while Danielle Irby picked up two aces. Potter said Vianna Lewis also had some "great plays."

Goldsboro entertains Tarboro on Thursday.

The Cougars traveled to Rosewood on Monday and suffered a 25-9, 25-7, 25-21 setback. The Eagles' served up seven aces in the non-conference encounter.

Roxie Phillips added three assists and three aces for Rosewood, which improved to 12-1 overall. Courtney Hill and Kasie Braswell added four digs apiece.

Mary Ann Sutton emerged the winner in first flight competition during the Pro-Lady tournament contested at Walnut Creek Country Club. Sutton also won closest-to-the-pin on hole No. 13.

Novella Zambelli, Kathy Woodard, Faye Franklin, Brooke Eason, Josie Ottaviani and Trude Williams tied in fourth flight.

Kevin Williams and Jonathan Hill for sixth place in the Pro division.

Dot Julian claimed game-of-the-week honors, while Jewel Ivey took low gross. Betty Holloway and Charlotte Campbell tied for low net.

Lauren Bynum, Lindsey Frederick, Nicole Fine and Elizabeth Borden each earned a straight-singles win for the Warriors.

The tandems of Bynum-Casie Musgrave, Frederick-Mollie Musgrave and Borden-Elizabeth Norden each prevailed in doubles.

Eastern Wayne (8-2, 6-1 ECC) swept the regular-season series against Hunt and entertains Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday.

Raychel Batts, Kristen Prosser, Lizzie Sodoma, Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett and Courtney Barnes each took a straight-set singles win. Batts, Sodoma and Barnes each shut out their respective opponent.

Batts-Sodoma, Prosser-Lauren Pierce and Mallory Strickland-Jessica Davis each triumphed in doubles.

Tara Hirsch, Katlyn Thornton, Amber Bowden, April Tucker, Brianna Lofton and Stephanie Cox each triumphed in singles.

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne swept Kinston 25-10, 25-18 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Warriors coach Bruce Burridge said Brittany Spence, Regan Stoneburner and Emily Sparks emerged the team leaders.

"They played strong with very few errors," said Burridge. "They ran the floor pretty well."

Eastern Wayne is the guest of Southern Wayne on Thursday.

CALYPSO -- Spring Creek emerged victorious 25-19, 20-25, 25-21 against North Duplin in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Sam Cates led the Rebels with six assists and seven service aces. Katie Swanzey had five aces and five digs, while Katlyn Eloshway contributed four aces.

Felicia Lynch collected four kills, one assist, four aces and three digs.

The Rebels face North Johnston on Thursday.

PRINCETON -- Rosewood stumbled in the opening set, but rebounded for a 21-25, 25-19, 25-20 victory over archrival Princeton in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday.

Paige Babb had one block, four kills, four digs and seven assists for the Eagles. Taylor Johnson contributed two aces, five kills, three digs and two assists.

Jennifer Hall added one ace, three kills and eight assists.

Rosewood (7-5, 4-1 Carolina) travels to Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.
