Eastern Wayne netters blank Kinston, improve to 6-1 overall

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne concluded first-half league play with a 4-1 worksheet after blitzing Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opponent Kinston 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the Bill Fay Park courts.

The Warriors (6-1) lost just four games in six singles matches combined.

Mollie Musgrave returned to the lineup and posted a shutout at the No. 2 slot. Musgrave missed three matches last week because of a severe sinus infection.

Top-seeded Lauren Bynum, Casie Musgrave, Lyndsey Frederick, Nicole Fine and Elizabeth Borden each claimed a straight-set singles win. Bynum-C. Musgrave, M. Musgrave-Frederick and Borden-Emily Northington each prevailed in doubles.

Eastern Wayne begins second-half play Thursday afternoon at county rival Southern Wayne.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Charles B. Aycock claimed its 296th consecutive victory in conference play with a 9-0 conquest of Southern Wayne on the John Neal Walker Center courts Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons soared to 6-1 overall and remained unbeaten at 4-0 on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene. The Saints endured their third straight loss in league play.

"Today was a big conference win," said Aycock coach Luke Vail. "Coach Brad Matthews is doing a fine job with Southern Wayne. They were very competitive."

C.B. Aycock's Kristen Bennett climbed to 7-0 in singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 conquest of April Tucker. Teammates Raychel Batts, Lizzie Sodoma, Emilee Quinn, Courtney Barnes and Kara Kelly each claimed a straight-set singles win. Sodoma lost just one game as the No. 2 seed.

Batts-Sodoma, Quinn-Bennett and Barnes-Kelly each prevailed in doubles.

"Raychel and Lizzie played excellent tennis today," said Vail. "We are continuing to improve our singles game."

The Golden Falcons travel to Wilson Beddingfield for a doubleheader on Thursday. The Saints (5-3, 2-3 ECC) travel to Spring Creek today and play host to Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

RALEIGH -- Unbeaten Wayne Christian prevailed in five of six singles matches and defeated Trinity Christian 5-1 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Mary West, Chris Hoeper, Katie Fairchild, Lindsay Whaley and Rebecca James each picked up a pro-set (eight-game) win in singles.

Rain washed out doubles play.

Wayne Christian (6-0, 4-0 CCC) entertains Trinity Christian on Friday. Game time is 4 p.m. on the John Allen Farfour Courts at Herman Park.

BETHEL -- Senior outside hitter Brittany Sanders pounded out a match-high nine kills as North Lenoir whipped North Pitt 25-16, 25-12, 25-18 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play.

Kayla Sutton added five kills, three blocks and three service aces. Marisa Lanier contributed two aces and two blocks.

Brittany McPhail collected three blocks.

North Lenoir (8-4, 2-1 EPC) entertains Goldsboro on Thursday.

CALYPSO -- Heather Hudson delivered 10 kills and served five aces in North Duplin's come-from-behind 15-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 15-10 victory over Ayden-Grifton in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

Brittany Carr added seven aces, five kills and six digs. Casey Pate contributed four kills and six digs. Sam Cates provided four kills.

Julie Ivey and Vanessa Lynch dished out 10 and seven assists, respectively.

North Duplin (7-1, 2-1 CC) travels to defending league champion Rosewood on Thursday.

PRINCETON -- Princeton remained unbeaten in the Carolina 1-A Conference scene at 3-0 with a 25-14, 25-13, 25-14 conquest of county rival North Johnston on Tuesday afternoon.

Stephanie Daughtry paced the Bulldogs with four aces, six kills and eight digs. Sarah Gibbs delivered four aces, four kills and one dig. Kortnie Yutzy and Tiesha Williams combined for seven kills.

Brittany Davis handed out 19 assists in the straight-set win.

Princeton (11-2) is the guest of Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Rosewood needed five games to turn back upset-minded Spring Creek 25-19, 17-25, 25-8, 14-25, 15-13 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles (10-1) picked up their 13th straight regular-season conference win heading into Thursday's home tilt with North Duplin. Spring Creek exited 0-3 against league opposition.

Senior Aubrey Reinhard collected three kills, eight service aces and dished out 14 assists in the five-set match. Courtney Hill contributed 12 kills and two aces.

Roxie Phillips handed out six assists to go along with one kill and four aces. Chandra Meadows and Kasie Braswell combined for seven kills and three aces.

Tasha Whitfield paced the Gators with 11 kills and four blocks. Shaquita Brooks added three kills and five blocks. Brandi Simpkins contributed six aces and three kills.

Kristin Smith provided two aces, four kills and three blocks. Brooke Albertson dished out 11 assists.

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock executed its passing game to near perfection in the first two sets against Wilson Hunt and eventually claimed a 25-11, 25-9, 21-25, 25-20 victory on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (7-2) improved to 2-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play, and travels to county archrival Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

Hunt fell 1-2 in the league.

"The first two games last night was the best we have played in a long time," said C.B. Aycock coach Davis Harris. "We got attacks just about every possession. Lauren Pratt gained a lot of confidence in the first game.

"She was mashing the ball and putting it where she wanted to. She was all over the court."

Pratt turned in career highs in kills (15) and blocks (six). Outside hitters Jazzmine Lee and Shelly Lancaster each contributed six kills.

Laura Thigpen served seven aces.

Lightning, rain

suspends match

Wayne Country Day led 1-0 when lightning and rain forced the suspension of Tuesday's match with Coastal Plains Independent 1-A rival Kerr-Vance Academy.

Cameron Ford tallied the goal for the Chargers.

"There is no word yet on when the game will be resumed," said second-year WCDS coach Paul Estrada.

The No. 1-ranked Chargers defeated No. 3-ranked Gaston Day 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. David Wilson collected two goals, while Sam Steed and Cameron Strickland added a goal apiece.

Wayne Country Day (7-2, 0-1 CPIC) travels to Ahoskie Ridgecroft on Friday.

at Waynesborough

Southern Wayne's Allen Bennett claimed first-place honors with a 20:52 as the Saints' boys defeated Spring Creek 22-36 at Waynesborough Park on Monday.

Tay Wilder (23 minutes, 14 seconds), Michael Pendergraft (26:50), Javaris McMillan (27:06), Kobi Hood (27:06) and Scott Harrell (27:28) all turned in top-10 times for Southern Wayne.

Alex Casey finished second overall for the Gators at 22:53, while teammates Ryan Kelley (23:26), Ross Montifia (27:56) and Andrew Swedenburg (28:01) also finished in the top 10.

Only three girls ran in the meet as Spring Creek's Savanna Eagleson was the top finisher at 33:40. Southern Wayne's Greta Marjerle (36:11) and Heather Strickland (40:05) also participated.

Spring Creek's Jordan Coor turned in a solid all-around floor game Tuesday afternoon, but county rival Rosewood emerged victorious 25-15, 27-25 in their Carolina 1-A Conference affair.

Coor served six aces, dished out five assists, collected three kills and two digs for the Gators. Shaquita Brooks added one kill and one block.

Hanna Hall provided three assists and seven kills.

Taylor Johnson led Rosewood with four kills and one ace. Caroline Tart served a team-high five aces and recorded six digs. Paige Babb and Jennifer Hall combined for nine assists.

Spring Creek remained winless in three Carolina Conference outings, while Rosewood (5-5) improved to 2-1 in the league.
