Mount Olive men seeking first CVAC soccer victory

The Mount Olive men's soccer team aims for its first conference win of the year as the Trojans travel to Misenheimer today to take on Pfeiffer in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference action. Match time is 4 p.m.

Mount Olive (3-4-0 overall, 0-2-0 CVAC) split a pair of 1-0 contests last week, defeating UNC Pembroke in double overtime last Wednesday before falling to nationally 11th-ranked Limestone Saturday.

Matt Wallin ranks among the CVAC leaders in goals and points, while Chris Jasso, Erik Small and Chris Varela all rank in the top 10 in assists.

Pfeiffer (3-2, 1-2) is coming off a double overtime loss to Belmont Abbey Saturday. The Falcons have lost their last two conference matches after opening conference play with a win over Queens.

Mount Olive defeated Pfeiffer 8-0 in last year's regular season meeting as Woody Stilley recorded a hat trick and Adam Caston tallied three assists. Pfeiffer denied the Trojans a chance at back-to-back CVAC titles with a 1-0 win in the quarterfinal round of last season's CVAC Tournament.

In a rematch of the semifinal round of the last two Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Soccer Tournaments, Mount Olive travels to Misenheimer today to take on Pfeiffer in CVAC action. Match time is 1 p.m.

Mount Olive (5-4-0 overall, 1-1-0) snapped a four-match losing skid and broke out of a scoring slump with a 6-2 victory over Limestone Saturday. Kate Painter and Kirsten White scored two goals apiece, all in a span of less than 10 minutes late in the first half.

Painter is tied for second in the CVAC in goals and tied for first in assists. April Jacobs ranks among the leaders in goals and assists, while Caitlyn Wright is also among the conference assists leaders. Goalkeeper Ali O'Steen entered last week's play with the lowest goals against average in the CVAC.

Pfeiffer (5-2-0, 2-0-0) is coming off a 1-0 win over defending CVAC champion Belmont Abbey Saturday. Laura Crews, last year's CVAC Women's Soccer Player of the Year, leads the conference in goals scored.

Mount Olive defeated Pfeiffer 3-0 in last year's regular season meeting, then outlasted the Falcons 4-3 in overtime in the CVAC Tournament semifinal. Lyndsay Brennan scored two goals, including the game winner. In the 2004 tournament, the Trojans defeated Pfeiffer 2-0 in the semifinals on their way to their first-ever conference title.

Match No. 2 in Mount Olive's six-match homestand takes place this evening as the Trojans play host to Pfeiffer in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's volleyball. Match time is 6:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

Mount Olive (4-6 overall, 3-3 CVAC) is coming off a marathon four-game win over Queens Saturday. The Trojans were one point away from facing a two-game deficit, but came back to win three straight games.

One week after recording her first collegiate "20-20' match, Sam Mitchell repeated the feat with 22 kills and a career-high 26 digs Saturday. Mitchell is the only player in the CVAC averaging more than 4.0 kills and 4.0 assists per game.

Corie Skislak is among the conference leaders in blocks, while Nikki Murphy ranks in the top 10 in digs.

Pfeiffer (6-7, 2-4) lost a pair of four-game matches over the weekend at Anderson and Limestone.

Mount Olive won both meetings against Pfeiffer last year.
