Local digest - Wayne Christian netters capture fifth win

Wayne Christian remained unbeaten on the Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference girls' tennis scene with a 9-0 victory over Johnston Christian on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles (5-0, 3-0 CCC) lost just three games in six singles matches combined, and prevailed 8-0 at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. Johnston Christian brought just five players to the match, and defaulted at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Mary West, Chris Hoeper, Katie Fairchild, Reagan Hinton and Samantha Reaves each seized a pro-set (eight-game) win. Hoeper, Hinton and Reaves each posted a shutout.

West-Rebecca James and Hoeper-Lindsey Whaley triumphed in doubles.

Spring Creek tumbles

in Carolina/Super 6 action

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Jamie Johnson and Ivey Best each earned a singles win in Spring Creek's 6-3 loss against Ayden-Grifton on the Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference scene Friday afternoon.

Johnson, the Gators' top seed, turned back Laura Steinlein 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-3. Best, the No. 6 seed, dumped the Chargers' Joelle Davis 7-5, 6-1.

Best teamed with Jamison Mossberg for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

Spring Creek (1-6, 1-3 C/SS) travels to defending conference champion and archrival Rosewood on Monday.

Tarboro pulls off stunner,

snaps Rams' EPC win streak

TARBORO -- Tarboro High turned in dominating performances at No. 1 and 2 doubles, and stunned state-ranked Greene Central 5-4 in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference showdown Friday afternoon.

The Vikings (8-0) remained unbeaten in three EPC contests and snapped the Rams' 127-match conference win streak, which began in September of 1993. Greene Central, the reigning N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state champion, dipped to 4-5 overall and 1-1 against league opposition.

"(Tarboro) played an excellent match against us in singles and doubles," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "Their dominance in the middle of the lineup, and at number one and two doubles was the difference.

"I was pleased with my girls overall. We competed hard for the most part, and I think that it was a valuable learning experience for our younger players."

The teams battled to a 3-3 tie after singles.

Tarboro's No. 1 doubles of Jasmine Burroughs-Miranda Spain shut out the Rams' Brittany Horton-Sarah Beth Carraway 8-0. Greene Central's No. 2 doubles suffered the same fate against Alison Thompson-Nellie Wilson.

"Burroughs really made a difference for Tarboro in singles and doubles," said Clark. "She just hit a lot of great shots at key moments throughout the match."

The Rams' Dana Spivey-Samantha Taylor triumphed at No. 3 doubles.

Horton, Taylor and Abby Sugg claimed a singles win.

Greene Central entertains Kinston on Monday. The Rams are ranked No. 3 in the latest N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association 2-A poll.

Rosewood prevails, picks

LITTLEFIELD -- Rosewood rolled to a 5-0 advantage in singles play before rain washed out the rest of its Carolina 1-A Conference skirmish with Ayden-Grifton.

The Eagles received pro-set (eight-game) wins from Missy Bailey, Erica Nichols, Jamie Andrews, Jillian Casey and Janneke Parrish. Bailey survived a tiebreaker against the Chargers' Linsey Richardson.

Top-seeded Sidney Worrell led Laura Steinlein 7-6 before heavy rains led to unplayable conditions.

Rosewood (3-2) won its 15th consecutive Carolina Conference regular-season match.

LITTLEFIELD -- Spring Creek's Brooke Albertson served three aces and dished out five assists in a 19-25, 13-25, 26-24, 27-25 loss at Ayden-Grifton.

The Gators fell to 0-2 in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

Brandi Simpkins and Jordan Coor each recorded four aces. Ashley Barwick had one ace, three assists, one kill and two digs. Shaquita Brooks provided two kills, two digs and three blocks.

Spring Creek entertains defending Carolina champion Rosewood on Tuesday.

James Kenan claws past Hobbton in Carolina action

NEWTON GROVE -- Ashanti Stroud delivered three kills in James Kenan's 25-19, 27-25, 25-22 victory over Super Six 1-A Conference opponent Hobbton.

Hannah Evans served two aces for the Tigers, while teammates Lauren Houston and Stephene Williamson each recorded an ace.

Saints suffer first defeat; GHS completes county sweep

Corey Baker grinded out 138 yards on 20 carries, and rushed for a touchdown in Southern Wayne's 36-14, non-conference loss at Goldsboro High.

Jabari Dos Santos added 74 yards on 15 carries. Gary Woodard provided a four-yard touchdown run.

Juan Segura paced the Southern Wayne defense with five solo stops and 21/;; sacks. Lorenzo Alford and Marcus Graham were each in on seven tackles.

Aaron Manuel forced a fumble.

The Saints (2-1) entertain Southern Nash next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Goldsboro plays at Jones Senior on Monday and visits Wilmington Hoggard on Thursday. Each contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

LITTLEFIELD -- Jordan Coor provided seven service aces and four assists in Spring Creek's 19-25, 25-20, 17-25 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton.

Shaquita Brooks contributed two aces and four kills. Hanna Hall contributed four aces, two assists and two kills.

Princeton sweeps Rebels,

remains unbeaten in league

PRINCETON -- Ashley Braswell, Kalina Yutzy and Hannah Wood each turned in solid serving efforts in Princeton's 25-10, 26-24 victory over North Duplin in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

The Bulldogs scored 15 points with Braswell on serve and 13 points with Yutzy on serve. Wood helped Princeton score 12 points.

"We served well and did a much better job of running an offense," said Princeton coach Paula Wooten. "Our passes were a lot better and Hannah is doing a good job of setting.

"Kalina had a great overall match as well as Ashley. The girls have worked hard and are improving each match."

Princeton (6-2, 2-0 Carolina) plays host to county rival North Johnston on Tuesday.
