West Craven claims 19th win in series vs. N. Lenoir

VANCEBORO -- North Lenoir finished with just 115 yards of total offense, including 43 in the first half, in a 29-21 loss at West Craven on Friday.

But a little bad clock management almost cost the West Craven football team -- dearly. Cruising along with a 29-7 lead Friday night, having given up just over 50 yards of total offense to North Lenoir, Eagles coach Clay Jordan decided to give some of his inexperienced players some action.

The clock was ticking down nicely for the Eagles, despite the Hawks' driving deep for the first time since the first half. Eventually North Lenoir scored on a 4-yard touchdown run by Andrew Manning with 3:32 left in the game to cut the score to 28-14.

After the Eagles ran one minute off the clock, the Hawks recovered a fumble with 2:24 left. With many backups in as well, North Lenoir (1-3) scored on a 10-yard run by Kenduall Thorbs with 1:03 to go, making it 29-21 as the Hawks' sideline began to feel an upset.

But the ensuing on-side kick by Ricky Jarman went out of bounds and West Craven ran out the clock.

The Eagles (3-1) jumped out to a 9-0 lead after Leigh Nobles ran for a 22-yard score with 6:06 left in the first quarter. The Hawks were then forced to punt, but the snap went over the punter's head and into the end zone for a safety.

North Lenoir would respond, however, getting an interception by Thorbs of a Mooring pass on the next possession. Two plays later, Nick Williams scored from four yards out.

West Craven's next two possessions ended in scores.
