Southern Wayne remained unbeaten on the girls' tennis scene with a 7-2, non-conference victory over Rosewood on Friday afternoon.

The Saints improved to 4-0 and completed their regular-season sweep over the Eagles, who compete in the Classes 1-A Carolina/Super Six Conference.

Sophomore Tara Hirsch, April Tucker, Amber Bowden, Brianna Lofton and Stephanie Cox each seized a pro-set (eight-game) win for Southern Wayne in singles action. Cox outlasted Rosewood's Janneka Parrish 9-8, including 7-5 in the tiebreaker.

"That match went on forever, but it was a good one to watch," said Saints coach Brad Matthews.

The doubles of Hirsch-Thornton and Lofton-Emily Martin also prevailed.

Second-seeded Missy Bailey picked up the Eagles' lone victory in singles. Bailey and Erica Nichols combined for a tight 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles.

Southern Wayne returns to action Monday at archrival Eastern Wayne. Match time is 4 p.m. on the Wayne Community College courts.

Wayne Christian triumphed in five of six singles matches and turned back county rival Wayne Country Day 7-2 in non-conference play.

Mary West, Chris Hoeper, Brooke Barfield, Katie Fairchild and Reagan Hinton each emerged victorious during pro-set (eight-game) singles play.

West-Fairchild and Hoeper-Barfield each claimed their respective doubles match.

Georgia Tanner earned the lone singles win for the Chargers. She teammed with Stephanie Knutson to pick up an 8-5 decision against the Eagles' Reaves-Hinton at No. 3 doubles.

Wayne Christian climbed to 3-0 overall.

rallies for win

Jessica Lewis posted 10 kills and two solo blocks as Wayne Country Day battled for a come-from-behind 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 26-24, 15-8 triumph over non-conference and county rival Wayne Christian.

Shelly Sullivan provided six service aces, 10 kills and six digs for the Chargers. Ashley Clark contributed six aces, seven kills and six digs.

Bre Radford added four kills, six aces and two solo blocks. Erin Taylor recorded nine aces, three kills and four digs. Kayla Flanagan delivered four aces and five digs.

"Our team played very well," said third-year WCDS coach Juliet Jones, a former Mount Olive College standout. "They played with a lot of intensity and heart. They are finally learning to play as a team and communicate with one another."

The Chargers (3-4) start their Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference season Tuesday at Kerr-Vance Academy.

Rosewood rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 25-15, 19-25, 25-20, 25-9 non-conference victory over Midway.

The Eagles (5-1) earned their 30th win in their last 32 tries after a defeat at perennial 2-A power North Lenoir.

Roxie Phillips and Aubrey Reinhard combined for 18 assists and two service aces in the four-set affair. Courtney Hill pounded out a team-high seven kills, followed by Ashley Williams with six kills.

Kasie Braswell and Chandra Meadows each collected five kills.

Rosewood (5-1) faces Midway on Monday in Spivey's Corner.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Hope Wright provided three kills and Brooke Norris served five aces in Wayne Christian's 25-15, 25-17, 25-20 non-conference sweep of Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Friday afternoon.

"Excellent serving led the way," said Wayne Christian coach Dawn Norris. "The team limited their passing errors and had great teamwork."

Traci Davis added two aces and three assists in the three-set sweep. Katie Daniels recorded a solo block.

Wayne Christian (6-8) travels to North Duplin on Monday.

exorcises Demons

WILSON -- Hassan Best and Will White each tallied a touchdown in Eastern Wayne's 14-6, non-conference conquest of Wilson Fike at Bedgood Stadium.

Danny Smith emerged the Warriors' top rusher with 65 yards. White added 53, while Best contributed 42. Eastern Wayne amassed 198 yards of total offense and lost two fumbles.

Head coach Jerry Pelt said Laquan Pearsall, Brandon McCullen and Kevin Gandreau-Faulk were the defensive standouts.

"I thought we played real well, much better than we did against Goldsboro," said Pelt. "We were more aggressive and organized. They probably had more plays than we did."

Eastern Wayne (1-1) travels to South Central on Monday, and plays host to D.H. Conley on Thursday.

Davis scores

twice for WCDS

Brandon Davis notched two goals within a five-minute span and assisted on another goal as Wayne Country Day rolled past Wayne Christian 5-1 in non-conference play.

Cameron Ford, Matt Davis and Hil Tanner added a goal apiece for the Chargers.

Chase Darden picked up the Eagles' lone goal in the 57th minute.

Keeper Kyler Reed recorded five saves for the Chargers, who avenged a 1-0 loss to their county rivals earlier this season.

Wayne Country Day (1-2-1) travels to Rocky Mount Academy next Thursday afternoon.

Taylor Johnson and Caroline Tart each provided five kills in Rosewood's 21-25, 25-21, 25-18 come-from-behind win over Midway.

Jennifer Hall, Christie Phillips and Paige Babb combined for 14 assists.
