K-Tribe rally falls short

KINSTON -- Kinston's comeback bid came up short as the Indians fell to Frederick 5-3 Monday night at Grainger Stadium.

Down 5-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Stephen Head hit a two-out, two-run single that brought home Brandon Pinckney and Rodney Choy Foo and shrunk Frederick's lead to two runs. The K-Tribe had runners on the corners in the bottom of the ninth, but Rommie Lewis got Frederick out of the jam and picked up his third save.

Frederick took a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning, before scoring three runs off Kinston reliever Mike Finocchi. Back-to-back-to-back doubles with two outs did the damage for Frederick, as the Keys added to a lead they would not relinquish.

Manuel Basilio (4-1) made a brilliant spot start for his fourth win of the season for the Keys. Basilio gave up six hits and one earned run over five innings.

Joe Ness (9-5) was the tough-luck loser for Kinston, giving up just two earned runs in a season-high seven innings.

Game two of the three-game series is tonight at 7 p.m. Scott Lewis (3-2, 1.59) takes the mound for the K-Tribe as Kinston continues its last homestand of the regular season.
