K-Tribe gets eighth sweep of season

WOODBRIDGE, Va. -- Brandon Pinckney hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning that scored Caleb Brock and gave Kinston a dramatic 5-3 win over Potomac on Sunday.

Potomac tied the score at three with a run in the bottom of the eighth before Kinston came back. Brock led off the ninth inning with a single. Jose Constanza tried to bunt him over, but his bunt attempt was popped up and caught in foul territory. With Micah Schilling at the plate, Brock advanced to third on two wild pitches.

Schilling walked and Pinckney drove Brock home with the game-winning RBI single. Jordan Brown drove Schilling home one batter later.

Kinston won all three games against the Nationals, completing their fifth series sweep of the season by winning two of the games in come-from-behind fashion.

K-Tribe starter Thomas Cowley got back on the right track, throwing six innings of one-hit ball. Cowley struck out four in his third Carolina League start of the season.

Randy Newsom (2-2) picked up the win in relief as Kyle Collins notched his fourth save of the season, striking out a pair batters in the bottom of the ninth.

Kinston started the scoring in the first inning when Jose Constanza took the first pitch of the game to the wall for a triple. Argenis Reyes drove him home with a sacrifice fly one batter later for the 1-0 Kinston lead. Down 2-1 in the fifth inning, Kinston took the lead with an RBI double from Jordan Brown and an RBI groundout from Rodney Choy Foo, scoring Micah Schilling and putting Kinston up 3-2.

With the win, Kinston improved to 32-24 in the second half of the season. The K-Tribe now is assured of a season series victory over Potomac, with an 11-5 record over the Nationals with just four more games to play.

Kinston is also assured of a season series winning record against six of their its Carolina League opponents in 2006. Only their season series with Winston-Salem, Kinston is 9-7 against the Warthogs, is in doubt.

Kinston returns to Grainger Stadium for their final homestand of the regular season tonight. The Indians will play Frederick in a three-game series today through Wednesday before ending the home schedule with Potomac.
