Taylor Zimmerman of State Road and Colleen Estes of Cary won the overall boys and girls titles, respectively, in the Roy Jones-Clarence Rose Junior Golf Classic held at Kinston Country Club and Walnut Creek Country Club Thursday and Friday.
Cary's Colleen Estes won the overall girls championship and the girls 18U division with a 2-round total of 147. A rising senior at Cary High School, Estes entered the final round at Kinston CC with a 1-stroke lead over Kristen Billings of Wilmington, who will be attending East Carolina University this fall on a golf scholarship.
Estes fired a 2-over par 73 to win by three strokes over Billings. Jamesville's Faith Hardison fired a tournament low round of even-par 71 to finished third at 153.
Zimmerman got off to a fast start on Walnut Creek's back nine -- his front nine -- with an eagle at the par-5 11th hole and a birdie on 13 to take a 4-stroke lead that he never relinquished. His final round, 4-under 68, gave Zimmerman a total of 10-under par for the 36 holes to capture the boys 18U division.
Pinehurst's Patrick Barrett won the 3-way playoff to take second place. It was the second playoff Barrett has been involved in within the last week as het won a playoff to capture the AJGA Richmond Junior. Barrett shot a final round 68 to tie Cary's Lee Bedford, the No. 3 ranked junior golfer in North Carolina and Greenville's Trey Harris at 4-under par 139.
Harris captured third place with a birdie on the fourth hole of the playoff. Coming off a third-place tie in the North Carolina Big "I" Championship, Zimmerman credited his driving and putting for the victory.
"I drove the ball really well this week and was consistently good with the flat stick," said Zimmerman.
Lillington's Bill Herring's final round 73 was good enough to hold off Wilmington's Boomer Boyd and Greenville's James Ellis by one stroke in the closely contested boys 15U division. Boyd, the first round leader shot 75 to finish at 144 along with Ellis, one back of Herring's even-par total of 143. Ellis defeated Boyd on the third hole of a sudden death playoff to capture second place.
Raleigh's Reeves Zaytoun followed up his 4-under par 68 with a 1-over par total of 72 at Kinston to win the boys 13U title over Joshua Chandler of Washington. Chandler matched Zaytoun's final round 72 to finish three strokes back. Henderson's Tripp Watkins matched his first round score of 74 to finish alone in third place at 148.
Greensboro's Chandler Upchurch back nine 39 score at Kinston captured the boys 11U division. Upchurch fired a 4- over par round of 40 in the first round for a 2-day total of 79. Upchurch defeated Snow Hill's Landon Elmore by four strokes. Elmore fired a final round 41 for a total of 83. Kinston's Justin Shimer captured third place on the first hole of a sudden death playoff as he birdied the first hole to defeat Raleigh's Will Minton.
