Wayne County 18U team eliminated from state tournament

TARBORO -- Wayne County's run in the Eastern N.C. State Babe Ruth 18U tournament ended with a 5-1 loss to Crystal Coast on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cobras, directed by head coach Bobby Davis, finished fourth overall in the double-elimination event contested at Municipal Stadium.
Billy McKinley threw six innings and Dustin Sittig hurled one inning for Wayne County, which concluded the season 11-3.
"Billy did a fantastic job in spite of playing in the extreme heat," said coach Davis.
Max Davis and Kevin Shanle each provided three hits in three at-bats each against Crystal Coast. Tyler Thomas batted 2-for-3 and an RBI. McKinley contributed one hit.
"We were missing a couple of key players during the last two games of the tournament, which really hurt," said coach Davis. "We had to play people out of position, which is really tough at this level."

KINSTON -- The Wayne County National 9-under All-Stars finished with a 3-2 record during the Eastern N.C. State Tournament held in Kinston.
The Nationals' run ended with a loss to Laurinburg in the semifinal round. West Raleigh won the tournament, while Wilson County and Winterville finished second and third, respectively. Laurinburg took fourth as Wayne finished fifth overall.
Ryan Faucette finished 11-for-15 (.733) in he tourney with a grand slam, three triples and three doubles.
Pitching for Wayne National during the tournament was Brannon Presson, Noah West, Ryan Davis, Jordan Gurley and Faucette.
The rest of the team is made up of the following players: Hank Smitherman, Alex Burke, Kyle Davis, Bobby Hampton, Jacob Hollingsworth, Garrett Joyner, and Austin Westbrook.
Wayne National moves on to compete in the Southeast Regional for 9-under in Wilson July 20-25 at Lee Woodard Elementary School fields.

Pitt County 39
wins Area I East
EDENTON -- Pitt County 39 successfully defended its Area I East Division championship with a 3-0 sweep over Edenton in the best-of-five division finals, which ended Monday.
Pitt County 39 faces Garner for the Area I championship, which begins Thursday at Pitt Community College. Game two is Friday in Garner and game three, if necessary, returns to PCC on Saturday.
Both teams have clinched berths in the eight-team state tournament which will be played in High Point later this month.

Betty Holloway emerged the play-of-the-day winner for weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek.
Kathy Woodard claimed low gross. Brooke Eason and Josie Ottaviani won low net and low putts, respectively.
Woodard seized first gross in the championship flight during an Eastern Ladies Golf Association tournament at Southern Wayne CC. Novella Zambelli (second gross, first flight), Linda Cannon (second gross, second flight) and Nancy Satterfield (second net, third flight) also turned in solid outings.
Linda Cannon captured play-of-the-day honors on July 11. Charlotte Campbell took low gross. Evelyn Rose and Holloway shared low-putt accolades.
