Wayne scores another 1-run road victory

WASHINGTON-- Wayne County seems to have appropriated an adage from the NCAA basketball tournament so far in this young American Legion season -- survive and advance.

Garrett Davis had two hits and saved his second game in as many days as Post 11 held on for a 2-1 victory over Beaufort County on Wednesday night at Washington High.

Wayne, 2-1 in Area One East play and 3-1 overall, will face Kinston tonight at home. Beaufort fell to 2-1 in league play.

The same theme played itself out again as the Wayne offense failed to produce much in the way of runs and had to be bailed out by the pitching. On the bright side, the six hits were double the amount in the win over Kinston the previous night. So far this season, Wayne's offense is hitting just .176.

Beaufort got its only run in the first on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Patrick Williams. The home team stranded six runners in scoring position.

Wayne tied it in the third. Jackson Massey reached on an error at short and stole second. Austin Hood drove him in two batters later with a ground ball single to right. Thomas Pilkington was hit by a pitch, and the runners advanced on a bunt by David Combs. A groundout ended the inning.

The other Wayne run came in the fifth. Massey singled to right, stole second and scored from there on Walker Gourley's ground out to shortstop because he was running on the pitch.

Wayne stranded runners in scoring position in the seventh and ninth innings.

Massey started and got his first win with five solid innings, allowing three hits and striking out eight. Combs hurled two, and Davis finished up.
