Spring Creek ends season with upset of North Johnston

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek's Timothy Rogers went the distance -- striking out seven against one walk as the Gators claimed an 8-7 upset win over North Johnston on Wednesday in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

The Gators (3-21 overall) concluded the season 2-8 against conference opposition. The Panthers (11-10) just missed the playoffs at 6-4 in league play.

Rogers gave up seven hits and seven runs (five earned), five of which came in the Panthers' five-run seventh inning.

"Timothy did a great job for us on the mound," Gators' coach Roger May said. "He showed what he was capable of doing."

Josh Gammon drove in three runs for Spring Creek, while Ray Grady added two RBIs.

Craig Hardin and Travis Jones paced the Panthers at the plate with two hits each. Josh Parrott suffered the loss on the mound.

In the Eastern Ladies two-day finals held at Birchwood Country Club, Jewel Ivey emerged overall winner by firing a 76 in the championship flight.

Other winners in this event were; Kathy Woodard (low putts, championship flight), Faye Franklin (low gross, second flight), Linda Cannon (second net, third flight), Evelyn Rose (low gross, fourth flight), Betty Holloway (low putts, fourth flight) and Pete Reaves (second gross, fifth flight).

The Walnut Creek ladies won the team trophy for the year.

In the Eastern Ladies two-day finals at Birchwood Country Club, Linda Watson won low gross in the first flight.

Other winners in this event were; Libby Newsome (low net, second flight), Donna Adams (second low net, second flight), Lou Ellen Flowers (second low net, fourth flight) and Betty Jean Gurley (closest to the pin).

In weekly tournament play, Sally Pope took game of the week and Gurley won low net and low putts.

Dixie Youth Majors

WCDS 9, Boys Club Mustangs 4 -- Cody Neal and Aaron Debusk combined for eight strikeouts in the win. Cole Davis had three hits, while Hil Tanner, Jamie Van Horn and Russell Turner added one hit each. WCDS (7-0) takes on the Rosewood Braves on Saturday.
