MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College banged out 19 hits against six different Lenoir Community College pitchers as the nationally 28th ranked Trojans claimed a 14-3 win over the Lancers in an exhibition contest at Scarborough Field on Saturday.
Eastern Wayne graduate Josh Carter led the way with four hits and four RBIs in five plate appearances, while fellow Warrior alumnus, Graham Wooten finished 2-5 with an RBI. Lance Martin (3-6, 2 RBIs, 3 runs) and Kyle Curtis (3-3, 2 RBIs) also posted multi-hit games.
After LCC (41-10) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on a double down the right field line by Matt Crane, the Trojans (39-16) went on to score 10 unanswered runs -- including five in the fourth. By game's end, 11 different Mount Olive players registered a hit.
Spring Creek product and UNC-Wilmington signee Jes Snyder smacked a solo home run to left in the top of the seventh against Mount Olive reliever Jonathan McClellan for the Lancers' final run.
Mount Olive effectively pitched by committee - using nine pitchers for one inning of work each. The group of hurlers scattered seven hits and combined for nine strikeouts with just one walk and two hit batters. Paul Buhrow, Ryan Barham, Patrick Ball, Brett Williams, Jonathan Staatz, Philip Pennington, McClellan, Jordan Arnold and Jesse Lancaster saw work on the mound for the Trojans.
LCC, ranked No.2 in the latest NJCAA poll, used seven pitchers as Paul Novicki started and worked the first three-plus innings -- yielding nine runs (five earned) on nine hits. Spring Creek graduate Michael Sigmon recorded the final two outs of the eighth with a pair of strikeouts.
Currently , the Trojans do not have any more scheduled exhibition games before they begin play in the South Atlantic Regional on May 18-21. LCC returns to action next weekend back at Scarborough Field when it takes on Southeastern Community College in a best-of-three, Region X Division II series.
