Cape Fear Christian spoils Wayne Christian's title bid in softball

WILSON -- Cape Fear Christian's Olivia Scarborough slugged a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh -- boosting her team to the Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference softball tournament title with a 4-3 win over Wayne Christian.

Cape Fear, ranked No.1 in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, remained unbeaten heading into the playoffs next week.

Wayne Christian, which suffered its only two losses to Cape Fear, will take a No. 2 ranking and 16-2 record into the postseason.

Scarborough also earned the win on the mound, yielding just three hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of work.

Traci Davis suffered the loss for Wayne Christian. Only three of Davis' four runs allowed were earned as she yielded two hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Brittany Sullivan, Kayla Kennedy and Michelle Krug paced Wayne Christian's three-run rally in the top of the seventh -- tying the game before Scarborough's game-winning blast.

Hawks sweep

Goldsboro High

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Connor Jordan struck out 17 batters in just six innings as the Hawks swept Goldsboro 27-0 and 20-0 in a Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference doubleheader on Friday.

Jordan got the win in both games, which lasted just three innings each.

Kayla Sutton, Jessica Kennedy and Jordan paced North Lenoir's offense in the first game, while Brittany Sanders, Nicole Howard, Megan Johnson and Sutton led the Hawks at the plate in game two.

North Lenoir (15-7 overall) improved to 7-2 in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference heading into Tuesday's regular season finale at home against Greene Central. Goldsboro hosts North Pitt on Tuesday in its finale.

Rain washes out

Carolina 1-A play

All six Carolina 1-A Conference games -- three baseball and three softball -- got underway, then were rained out in the early innings on Friday evening.

In baseball, Princeton trailed Ayden-Grifton 6-1 in the top of the fourth at the Chargers' field, and the game will be resumed on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

North Duplin and Rosewood are tied at 0-0 in the second inning and play will continue on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Rosewood. Spring Creek's home contest against North Johnston will also resume on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Before the heavy showers, North Duplin's softball team had a 6-0 lead at Rosewood in the top of the second. That game will continue on Monday at 4:30 p.m., as will North Johnston's contest at Spring Creek.

Princeton is leading Ayden-Grifton 3-0 in the fourth when that game resumes at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Carolina Conference gets two automatic bids to the state playoffs.
