K-Tribe wins in walkoff fashion

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Dan Schwartzbauer's bases-loaded single down the first base line in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Lynchburg Hillcats a walkoff 3-2 win over the Kinston Indians on Tuesday night.

The K-Tribe tied the game in the top of the ninth when Brian Barton lined a one-out triple to the wall in right field. Stephen Head would drive Barton home with a sacrifice fly, tying the score at two.

Barton extended his hitting streak to a Carolina League-best 13 games in the second inning with a solo home run that made the score 1-1.

The Hillcats broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when a Joe Ness breaking ball got away from Wyatt Toregas and Brian Bixler scored from third. A close play at the plate led to an argument from Ness and later manager Mike Sarbaugh. Sarbaugh was quickly thrown out of the game.

After Barton scored in the top of the ninth, the score would stay tied until the bottom of the 10th inning when Vince Roy led off with a single to center against K-Tribe reliever T.J. Burton. After getting Brad Correll to ground out, Burton intentionally walked Michael Carlin, putting runners at first and second base. The next batter, Brad Rae, hit a ground ball to Brian Finegan who misplayed the ball, drawing an error and leaving the bases loaded with just one out.

Schwartzbauer, who had been inserted as a defensive replacement the previous inning, then lined a single down the first base line scoring Vince Rooi from third and ending the game.

T.J. Burton (0-2) took the loss for the Indians while Steve Duguay (1-0) rang up his first win of the season.

The two teams finish the four-game series today with a 7:05 p.m. contest.
