Mount Olive College athletes honored in year-end banquet

MOUNT OLIVE -- Women's golfer Lindsey Snyder was named Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row and women's volleyball player Heidi Busch became a two-time Outstanding Female Student-Athlete of the Year winner as the 2005-06 Mount Olive College Athletics Awards were presented this week.

Baseball player Josh Carter was named Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and men's basketball player Maurice Horton was named Outstanding Male Student-Athlete of the Year.

The Scholar Athlete of the Year award recognizes academic and athletics excellence. The student-athlete must be a junior or senior with a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA and must be a starter or key reserve.

Carter, a junior from Goldsboro, is a two-time All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference First Team selection and was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America All-District III First Team.

Snyder, a senior from Goldsboro, is a three-time All-CVAC selection and a two-time CVAC All-Academic selection. Snyder was a 2005-06 finalist for the prestigious CVAC Murphy Osborne Award.

The Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year award recognizes leadership, sportsmanship, athletics accomplishment and academic achievement. The student-athlete must be a junior or senior.

Horton, a senior from Hampton, Va., is a three-time All-CVAC Tournament selection and a 2004-05 All-CVAC Honorable Mention. Horton has helped lead the Trojans to three consecutive 20-win seasons and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

Busch, a senior from Fort Wayne, Ind., became the first-ever three-time All-American in Mount Olive athletics history. Busch finished her career ranked fifth on the NCAA Division II women's volleyball all-time career kills list with 2,456 career kills.

The other men's finalists were Reid Clewis (men's soccer), Tim Insley (men's cross country) and Victor Young. The other women's finalists were Teneal Boone (women's basketball), Lucia Henkle (women's tennis) and Kate Somek (women's golf).

During the awards ceremony, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee chair Sam Mitchell (women's volleyball) and the six male athletes who were contestants in last week's "MOC Womanless Beauty Pageant" were recognized for their efforts in raising more than $1,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

The women's volleyball and men's basketball teams were presented with plaques provided by the NCAA for their participation in NCAA Division II Championship play in 2005-06.

The baseball and men's golf teams were also recognized for their upcoming NCAA II Championship appearances and will be presented with plaques during 2006-07.

Also recognized were Mount Olive student-athletes who earned CVAC All-Academic honors in 2005-06. Seniors from each of the teams, as well as senior athletic training student assistants Brad Evans and Dawn Faircloth were also recognized.
