ECC women's soccer pairings announced; Warrior men's tennis wins ECC crown

Athletics directors from the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference met Thursday to determined postseason proceedings for women's soccer and men's tennis.

Southern Wayne, which has battled injuries and sickness all season, withdrew from the soccer tournament which is slated to begin Saturday at Eastern Wayne. The Saints' departure gives a first-round bye to Charles B. Aycock, which finished third overall in the six-team league.

The lone first-round matchup is fifth-seeded Kinston (2-17) at fourth-seeded Wilson Beddingfield (11-6-1) on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. The winner draws a semifinal-round date at ECC co-champion and top-seeded Eastern Wayne (9-8-1) at 7 p.m. Monday.

C.B. Aycock (6-11-2) faces ECC newcomer and co-champion Wilson Hunt (11-7-1) at 5 p.m. Monday on the Little Big Horn pitch. The two winners square off for league supremacy at 7 p.m. Wednesday in New Hope.

Inclement weather that blanketed eastern North Carolina late Wednesday evening and all day Thursday forced ADs to officially conclude regular-season play in men's tennis.

Eastern Wayne (12-2) was announced the conference champion after posting a 9-0 record. The Warriors drew the ECC's No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, which begin May 9.

The season-ending conference tournament is scheduled for May 3-4 at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex. Two rounds will be played each day to determine qualifiers for the NCHSAA eastern regionals.

Carolina 1-A men's tennis rivals Rosewood and Spring Creek have rescheduled their season-ending match to May 4 -- one day after their conference tournament at Herman Park. The winner earns the No. 1 seed for the dual-team playoffs.

Princeton moved its baseball and softball games against Carolina 1-A rival North Duplin to May 8. Each contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek claimed a 4-3 win over Princeton on Tuesday as the Gators captured their first Class 1-A Carolina Conference victory of the season.

Lisa Mozingo had two hits and an RBI for Spring Creek (1-5 Carolina), while Casey Coor also drove in one run. Lorenda Brogden tossed seven innings, yielding five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

April Keene had two hits, including a triple for the Bulldogs (2-4 Carolina), while Amber Wood endured the loss for Princeton.

The Gators travel to Ayden-Grifton today as Princeton hosted North Duplin on Thursday.
