Southen Wayne upends Hawks/Prep roundup

LaGRANGE -- Southern Wayne turned in a flawless defensive performance and upended state-ranked North Lenoir 5-1 on the softball diamond Friday evening.

Lindsay Pearsall led the Saints, who committed five errors in a Thursday loss against South Lenoir, with three hits and an RBI in three plate appearances. Alyssa Bradshaw and Lynn Grantham (two RBI) each delivered two hits.

Rachel Reynolds and Meredith Davis each contributed an RBI.

Freshman right-hander Lauren Darden picked up her 12th win on the mound, striking out three and surrendering one earned run on six hits.

Timon Jones doubled in three at-bats and Lauren Hudson plated North Lenoir's lone run.

Connor Jordan suffered the pitching loss.

Southern Wayne (12-7) travels to Wilson Beddingfield next Tuesday and visits East Duplin for a non-conference game on Wednesday. North Lenoir (11-6), ranked No. 4 in the latest N.C. Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Class 2-A poll, entertains Farmville Central at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

WILSON -- Jackson Massey threw four strong innings in relief and state-ranked Charles B. Aycock defeated Wilson Fike 5-1 in non-conference play Friday evening.

The Golden Falcons claimed their first-ever victory on the Golden Demons' diamond.

Massey (2-0) limited Fike to one hit and notched eight strikeouts in relief of right-handed starter Garrett Davis. Davis allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out three in three innings of work.

"Jackson ... his performance speaks for itself. He gave us a big lift on the mound and that's what we're looking for," said Aycock head coach Charles Davis, whose teams were 0-4 at Fike during the old Big Eight 3-A days. It was good to go over there and get a win despite not playing extremely well. I didn't think we played with a whole lot of emotion."

The Golden Demons, of the NEW 6 Athletic 3-A Conference, seized a 1-0 lead on Thomas Moore's RBI single in the first inning.

Massey delivered a two-RBI single as Aycock moved ahead 3-1 in the second. Brandon Price produced an RBI triple in the fourth and the Golden Falcons added a single run in the fifth.

Jacob Davis endured the mound loss for Fike.

Joseph Toler contributed one hit and scored two runs in three at-bats.

C.B. Aycock, ranked No. 2 in the latest ImpactBaseball.com 3-A poll, carries a 19-1 record into Kinston next Tuesday. The Eastern Carolina 3-A game begins at 7 p.m. at Viking Field.

VANCEBORO -- Two late-game throwing errors produced two unearned runs as state-ranked North Lenoir rallied to defeat West Craven 5-4 on Friday evening.

The game-changing errors occurred in the fifth and sixth innings on pick-off attempts. The Hawks, the defending N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A champions, scored five runs during that stretch to erase West Craven's three-run advantage.

Brandon Sutton and Sthil Sowers each provided RBI singles for North Lenoir. Teammates Brian Smith and John Alphin each doubled.

Sowers emerged the winning pitcher in relief of Alphin. Sowers yielded two hits and struck out four in three innings of work. Alphin fanned four Eagle batters and allowed three runs on four hits in two innings.

Sutton started and struck out five in two innings.

North Lenoir (18-1), the state's top-ranked 2-A team according to ImpactBaseball.com, entertains Farmville Central next Tuesday. The Eastern Plains 2-A contest begins at 7 p.m.

Rose nearly

perfect for CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Jay Rose fired a no-hitter and came within one batter of recording a perfect game in Charles B. Aycock's 6-0, non-conference victory over West Craven. Rose fanned 15 Eagle batters and walked one in a complete-game effort.

The Golden Falcons (16-1) avenged their only loss of the season.

Stephen Strouse batted 3-for-4 and scored three runs for Aycock. Rose homered in a 3-for-3 showing, while Jordan Carr provided two hits and two RBIs.

Aycock returns to action April 28 at Wilson Hunt. Game time is 5 p.m.
