DURHAM, N.C. -- Tailback Re'quan Boyette's eight-yard touchdown run highlighted Duke's spring game on Saturday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium as the Blue Devil offense edged the defense, 38-37. The 35-play scrimmage utilized a scoring system that allowed both sides of the ball to earn points on each snap.

"There were some good things on both sides of the ball today," said Duke head coach Ted Roof. "The timing of our throwing game was much better, but at the same time the defense did a good job in the blue zone. You want to see good things out of both sides. You don't want one side to dominate the other side, and that didn't happen. There were good things on both sides of the ball and also in the kicking game. We're a lot further ahead than we were at the start of spring. We've made some big strides, but those big strides have been a bunch of little steps. We've got to keep taking those steps and keep making those gains."

Quarterback Zack Asack completed 4-of-7 pass attempts for 59 yards while Marcus Jones hit on 2-of-7 throws for 33 yards. Eron Riley was the top receiver on the day with three receptions for 54 yards while tight end Nick Stefanow had two catches for eight yards. Boyette paced the ground attack with 18 yards on three carries while Clifford Harris rushed twice for 17 yards.

Defensively, linebacker Michael Tauiliili was credited for five tackles including two for loss while defensive tackle Casey Camero logged three stops with one tackle for loss and one sack. The defense recorded two turnovers as Patrick Bailey and Alex Williams each recovered one fumble.

Kicker Joe Surgan added a 44-yard field goal.

Duke will open the 2006 season at home against Richmond on September 2 at 6 p.m.
