Indians get back to their winning ways

KINSTON -- The Kinston Indians got back on the winning track with a 5-0 shutout victory over visiting Winston-Salem on Saturday night at Grainger Stadium.

K-Tribe third baseman Matt Whitney got the scoring going in the second inning with a long three-run home run to right field, scoring Brian Barton and Jordan Brown.

It was the second home run in two games for Whitney.

The Indians (7-2) added another run in the sixth inning, when Brandon Pinckney scored as Stephen Head grounded into a double play. The Tribe picked up another run in the seventh when Argenis Reyes scored after an error by the Warthogs first baseman Chris Kelly.

The Warthogs (6-3) managed four hits while committing three errors in the game.

Right-handed starter Adam Russell (0-1) picked up the loss for the Warthogs.

K-Tribe starter Chuck Lofgren picked up his second win of the year, throwing five innings of scoreless ball, giving up three hits while striking out two. The 20-year-old Lofgren has not giving up an earned run in 10 innings of work this season.

Kinston relievers Kyle Collins and Scott Roehl pitched the final three innings, preserving the Indians first shutout of the season.

Kinston and Winston-Salem will finish up the series today with a 2 p.m. Easter Sunday matinee.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Warthogs, 8, K-Tribe 3

One winning streak collided with another Friday night at Grainger Stadium, as the Winston-Salem Warthogs won their fifth straight, snapping the K-Tribe's six win streak.

The Warthogs won 8-3 behind solid pitching and a big night at the plate. Winston-Salem busted out of the gates with three runs in the first inning and three in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Warthog first baseman Chris Kelly continued to dominate at the plate with a two run home run in the third and a solo shot in the fifth.

The Hogs jumped all over K-Tribe starter Jensen Lewis (1-1), touching him up for seven runs and 10 hits in five innings.

Carlos Torres (1-1) picked up the win for Winston-Salem. Kinston's Matt Whitney hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot to centerfield in the second inning.

The K-Tribe added two more runs in the eighth with RBI hits from catcher Wyatt Toregas and second baseman Argenis Reyes.
