KINSTON -- Mama said there would be days like this.
Right-handers Zach Furl and Casey Collins combined for a one-hitter as Lee County shut out Eastern Wayne 10-0 Saturday in opening-round play of the inaugural George Whitfield Invitational.
Furl yielded a first-inning single to the Warriors' Tyler Ham and notched four strikeouts in three innings of work. Collins replaced Furl and provided two innings of no-hit, one-strikeout relief.
Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum offered no comment on the contest, which was shortened to 41/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. The Warriors (6-10) endured their fourth defeat in their last five outings.
The Yellow Jackets manufactured eight earned runs on six hits against right-hander Michael Mintz. Chad Sutton, a left-hander, walked the lone batter he faced. John Wooten delivered two-plus innings of no-hit, one-strikeout relief.
The Warrior pitching staff issued a season-high nine walks.
Furl paced the Lee County offense with two hits and two RBI in two plate appearances. Dan Cowan belted a two-RBI single in the first inning as the Yellow Jackets moved ahead 3-0.
Trey Such doubled home two runs in the second, while Furl and Cowan each plated a run.
Lee County (11-6) tallied two unearned runs in the fourth inning.
Tournament play continues Monday on the Viking Field diamond at Kinston High School. Eastern Wayne opposes either South Central or Boone Watauga at 1:30 p.m.
