MOC's Young and Coffield named to NCCSIA second team

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive's Elton Coffield and Victor Young were named to the 2005-06 NCCSIA College Division All-State Men's Basketball Second Team, as selected by members of the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. Both players also earned All-State honors last year.

And in women's hoops, Teneal Boone was named to the 2005-06 NCCSIA College Division All-State Women's Basketball Second Team.

Coffield, a junior from Williamston, continued his role as the Trojans' "sixth man," coming off the bench in all 32 games and leading the team in scoring with an average of 15.3 points per game.

An All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference first team selection for the second year in a row, Coffield scored a career-high 35 points in the CVAC Tournament semifinal round against Pfeiffer. He also reached the career 1,000-point mark this season. Coffield earned All-Tournament honors for the second consecutive year at the CVAC Tournament.

Young, a senior from Goldsboro, averaged 13.8 points per game, including a 24.5 scoring average at the 2006 NCAA II East Regional.

A two-time CVAC Player of the Week selection this season, Young celebrated Senior Night with a career-high 38 points against Pfeiffer in the Trojans' regular season home finale against Pfeiffer. He also set a school record for most points in an NCAA Tournament game with 31 points against Barton in the regional semifinal. Young, who reached the career 1,000-point mark in 2005-06, opened the season by being named Most Valuable Player at the 40th Annual Mount Olive Pickle Classic.

Mount Olive posted its third consecutive 20-win season with a 25-7 record and earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship for the third year in a row.

The Trojans were ranked as high as No. 6 in the NABC Division II Top 25 and finished the season ranked No. 25. Mount Olive, which reached the Elite Eight in 2005, defeated No. 18 Shippensburg in the first round of the 2006 East Regional before falling to No. 9 Barton in the semifinals.

Boone, a senior forward from Jacksonville, averaged a double-double this season with 16.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She recorded 17 double-doubles this season and averaged 24.5 points and 14.0 rebounds in the first two rounds of the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament.

Boone scored a career-high 27 points in the first round against Lees-McRae and reached double figures in scoring in 24 of 29 games this season. Boone, who ranked second in the CVAC in rebounding and led the conference in blocked shots per game, pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds in games against Belmont Abbey and Pfeiffer. Boone was a two-time CVAC Player of the Week winner this season.

Boone reached the career 1,000-point mark in late January and finished with 1,221 points for her career.

The Lady Trojans posted a 16-13 mark this season, recording their highest single-season win total and winning percentage since moving to NCAA Division II classification in 1995-96. Mount Olive was 10-10 in conference play.

Staatz named

Pitcher of Week

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive starter Justin Staatz has been named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.

Pennington becomes the third Mount Olive pitcher and the fifth Trojan overall this season to earn CVAC baseball player or pitcher of the week honors.

Staatz, a senior from Woodstock, Md., tossed a complete game three-hitter in the Trojans' 5-4 win over Chowan on Saturday. He struck out nine and retired 15 of 17 batters during one stretch from the second through sixth innings. All of Chowan's runs were unearned.

Staatz (5-4) ranks third in the CVAC with a 2.88 earned run average. He earned All-CVAC first team and All-South Atlantic Region second team honors last year.

Along with Staatz, starter Phillip Pennington and reliever Donald Huff have also taken home CVAC Pitcher of the Week honors. Josh Carter and Josh Harrison won Player of the Week awards earlier this season.

Mount Olive (27-11 overall, 10-8 CVAC) puts its six-game winning streak on the line today as the Trojans play host to St. Andrews. The two teams played a three-game series in February and today's contest does not count towards the CVAC standings. Game time is 6 p.m. at Scarborough Field.
